The Hāna Highway is a 64.4-mile long stretch of spectacular views of rainforest, waterfalls, beaches and coastline. On the east after Kalepa Bridge, the highway continues to Kīpahulu on the Piilani Highway. Although Hāna is only about 52 miles from Kahului, it takes about 2.5 hours to drive when no stops are made as the highway is very winding and narrow and passes over 59 bridges, 46 of which are only one lane wide. There are approximately 620 curves along Route 360 from just east of Kahului to Hāna, virtually all of it through lush, tropical rainforest. Many of the concrete and steel bridges date back to 1910 and all but one are still in use. This full-day trip to the Hana coast has the best scenic drive along the shorelines of Maui.

Seating was comfortable and the food was good. The driver was very friendly. Other passengers were fun and we had good conversations. Make sure to bring a towel and an umbrella. It did rain for part of the tour, but majority of the time was good weather.

bring good gym shoes or water shoes, And not the mesh water shoes. More the hiking water shoes that have a firm sole. It’s much easier on your feet. Ed was great. Trusted him completely on the drive. Only suggestion is that the estimated round trip from Wailea is more like 11 hours not 8-10 hours as listed. Just so people can plan appropriately for dinner reservations.

Lepa was a lovely and very entertaining tour guide. We really appreciated that she kept the energy light and told us stories about life in Hawaii, her own cultural background, and experiences, and incorporated those into our day to better understand day-to-day island life. She offered many opportunities for questions and did a great job of keeping the conversation going - despite our tour group being fairly quiet. The stops we made were really great - seeing HUGE sea turtles on the beach, stopped at an oceanside overlook/restroom break, visited Hana Farms for banana bread, swam in a waterfall, black sand beach and lava tube, drove through Hana town and had interesting things pointed out for us, stopped for fresh roadside coconuts (with option to also get more food if you wanted something beside the lunch provided), another stop for coconut ice cream (fresh coconuts and banana bread also available here), and a final oceanside stop. We saw a lot of waterfalls and rainbow eucalyptus trees along the way. We had spam musabi for breakfast, and it was actually so good - I was hesitant about the spam, but it was very well seasoned and delicious! Lunch was a classic turkey sandwich on a sub roll, with a bag of chips and water. Our lunch was while at the black sand beach, which as an FYI, does have a lot of feral cats and kittens in the parking lot and at the picnic tables immediately next to the parking lots. They are not aggressive, but do beg for your food once they see what you've got. I'd be mindful of this in planning where you choose to eat (aka on the bus or at the actual beach if you don't want the cats near). Finally, Lepa was an excellent driver on a very challenging road. I felt very safe with her, and it was especially comforting knowing that she drives the road often and was very familiar with it. We loved having her host us for the day!

Our tour guide, Randy, was excellent. He knew so much about the island and the local flora and fauna. He gave us tips on how to get down to the waterfall safely and was always near to help with advice or information. He also showed a great cave near the black sand beach. We had an amazing time!

So much to see and do, sea turtles, lush rainforest with gorgeous flowers and rainbow eucalyptus trees, coconut milk, chocolate plantation, waterfalls, coconut ice cream, black sand beach. Hopefully you get Lepi as your guide. She’ll make the trip even more memorable.
