Our Road to Hana tour with Alec was absolutely amazing! From start to finish, he made the entire experience feel personalized and special. Alec took us to unique, off-the-beaten-path stops that we never would have found on our own — and they ended up being even better than the typical tourist spots. He was incredibly friendly, knowledgeable, and really took the time to tailor the tour to what we enjoyed most. Whether it was stunning viewpoints, hidden waterfalls, or local treats, every stop felt thoughtfully chosen. We never felt rushed, and it was clear Alec genuinely wanted us to have the best possible experience. If you’re thinking about doing the Road to Hana, do yourself a favor and go with Alec — you’ll see the island in a way most people never get to!

The Road to Hana is a much better Road in the back seat of a Jeep Wrangler than driving yourself. Then you throw in Alec (Tour Guide / Driver) you are in for a most excellent adventure. I don’t want to say too much and spoil it, except this- I Highly Recommend It.

The Road to Hana is much better Road in the back of a Jeep Wrangler. Not having to drive this very Famous but winding narrow road is a huge plus, then you throw in this most excellent guide Alec- makes for a perfect adventure. He is super knowledgeable of the area and brings you to places you wouldn’t believe. Yes, it is early start to start a tour- 7am, but what a very wise gentleman once told me, “The early bird gets the worm in Maui”. Mahalo!

If you want the absolute BEST road to Hana experience, this is THE tour to book. I promise!! Alec takes you to secret waterfalls where the tourists don’t go and are absolutely breathtaking. He was so professional and I felt safe the entire time and he paced everything out where we were ahead of the tour groups for even better photos. This is one tour I will never forget and I was beyond grateful to have him as a guide, driver, and friend throughout this experience.

Like most travelers, we googled and researched the road to Hana before we went. We looked at photos and online reviews and tried to imagine what to expect. What we actually experienced, however, was beyond our expectations and imagination. Our guide.- Alec Hawley- redefined for us what a tour should be. The road to Hana is a very winding highway so the initial reason we wanted a guide was for someone who could drive us and had knowledge of the region to drive us and explain for us all of the sites. We are a family of four. Myself , my wife and our two children -a son 14 and our daughter who is 13. Right after the drive began he pulled over and needed to purchase something for about two minutes. As our drive progressed, he opened the window and fed a stray dog who lives at the same spot under one of the bridges. Apparently he and six other tour operators take turns feeding this dog who looks happy, healthy, and content. We found Alec not only to be a wonderful tour guide, but also a wonderful human being overall. In addition to taking care of this stray dog, he also is extremely interested in preserving Maui and making it a better place. Without going into too much lecture and in a very engaging in humorous way, he explained to us all that is going on in Maui currently and how it relates to its near and distant past. He was able to explain to us just about every geological formation, plant and shrub, historical occurrence, and points of interest. Did you know that the Christmas tree like trees that line the island are called Cook Island trees? Apparently, the British planted these trees on all the South Pacific islands that they visited in case they should become shipwrecked they can use these trees to repair their ships or build new masts. You may have heard the expression "off the beaten path" well, Alec certainly did that for us. He showed his points of interest that other travelers were missing were finding at the wrong time. For example, he took us to a black sand beach, where we and one other family were the only visitors. Maui is also full of hidden waterfalls. These are waterfalls that require a 5 to 10 minute hike and our in locations that are not on typical tours. He would stop the car and lead us through a path that lead to one of these many mystical sites. Have you ever watched a movie about a tropical local where there is a gorgeous waterfall with luscious surroundings and wondered if this is something created on a Hollywood stage? Well places like that really do exist and all you have to do is stop the car and go for a hike And Alec showed us each and every one of these places. Add one such waterfall we were able to swim right up to the waterfall in Crystal clear freshwater in the most refreshing swim we have all ever had. He would take pictures for us. He also took videos for us and narrated them explaining what he saw. He also did this for us when they were spots along the drive where it was difficult to stop and for all four of us to get out, he would stop and take a picture for us on our phones or take a video and narrated it. Tip: Wear comfortable shoes that are appropriate for water such as waterproof Teva's. They should also have a good grip so that if you have to step on a rock – which are often covered in algae – you won't slip. Tip: expect a good amount of hiking sometimes this involves hiking along pads that are very steep. Alec guided us through the entire process, including how to use the bamboo that grows along the path as a handle At one stop called the three bears waterfalls because there is a small medium and large waterfall, he took pictures and videos of us as we swim toward the waterfall and sat right behind the falling water. Other tourists stopped along the highway and could look over a bridge and look down at what we were doing. .They appeared to be extremely envious and wanted badly to find the same trail off the beaten path that would allow them to experience this wonder. Alec guided us at our own pace so that we could arrive there safely. Tip: be prepared to hike and wear appropriate clothing. This includes a bathing suit, light, quick drying clothes and perhaps a quick dry towel. It seemed to us that we were a step of head of any other tourist. Whenever we would enter a point of interest and finish, others would then just arrive. Tip: try to do the tour as early as possible to beat any crowds. It is much less crowded earlier. Tip: Get a good nights rest and drink plenty of water to prepare for the hiking. Alec at 65 but does not even break a sweat when he hikes. He will go faster or slower, depending on your pace. Our children remarked that "this was the best day we have ever had" and we must agree. From the sites and hiking to the greatest banana bread that we've ever had showed us things we never knew existed.

Would and will take this trip with Alec again next year. Very knowledgeable, arrived at exactly the time he said he would and made our trip the best. Very patient and tailored or trip to what we were interested in doing. Went to places that were absolutely beautiful with nobody else around. Lots of hidden gems on his trips. Just do it!
