400 Years ago the first Dutch East India Company ships arrived back in Holland filled with the Chinese blue and white porcelain. This porcelain became very popular among affluent families such as the European Royals. When the import of Chinese porcelain declined as a result of civil wars in China, the Dutch potteries seized the opportunity and developed their own version of this blue and white porcelain. This resulted in the birth of Delft Blue in the Netherlands. Nowadays, Delft Blue is one of the true Dutch icons.

Royal Delft - Koninklijke Porceleyne Fles
From the approximately 32 potteries that were founded in the 17th Century, Royal Delft, established in 1653, is the only remaining Delftware factory left in Delft. It is a national heritage and a must-see when visiting Holland! Here, the renowned Royal Delftware is still entirely hand painted according to centuries-old tradition. In 1919 the company was awarded the prefix ‘Royal’ confi rming its special relationship with the Dutch Royal family. For generations the Dutch Royal family have been true admirers of Royal Delftware. Nowadays Royal Delft is not only a factory for Delft Blue and a knowledge institute for ceramics, but also a museum. When visiting Royal Delft you discover the complete history and the production process of Delft Blue and Royal Delft in an audiovisual presentation. You witness a painter at work and are introduced to the other two icons of Delft in the themed chambers: the dining room of Johannes Vermeer, the famous 17th century painter from Delft and the Royal Chambers containing the collection of Orange Ceramics that has been produced over the centuries for the Dutch Royal family. In the museum, you can admire the collection of antique and modern pieces of Delft Blue earthenware and in the factory you can witness the authentic production process. In the showroom a comprehensive collection of hand painted earthenware by Royal Delft and a collection of souvenirs is on show. Royal Delft offers workshops during which you can try your hand at painting Delft Blue. Overlooking the beautiful courtyard the Brasserie serves delicious coffee, tea, lunches and High Teas. Tours are available in various languages.

Don’t plan on rushing through the museum and factory unless you really don’t care for that sort of thing. The whole experience was fascinating and really enjoyed sitting down in the cafe afterwards with a cup of tea served in authentic Delftware.

The museum was fascinating! Seeing the workers actually doing their craft was crazy. The employees were extremely helpful and very nice.

The tour is self guided… reading panels in each room, looking at samples and watching screens showing how it is done. It was well laid out, informative and we enjoyed it. There is an option for using an audio player but it says the same thing and we didn’t use it much. There are some very cool and interesting displays. Walking through the factory was cool and you can stop to watch someone working on the pieces and someone painting. Happily spent quite a long time in there reading and watching it all.

The factory and shop was a very interesting experience. I wish there were a little more direction. Such as the time they open and close. There was no guide, but there was an audio guide with stops along the way. You are completely on your own.

Very nice. Absolutely recommended to go once if you like culture and beautiful objects. Educational to see how it is made and how the Delft blue becomes so beautiful blue.

Great museum and self guided tour. The hand painted porcelain is outstanding. The shop offers a good range for sale but perhaps could include seconds for the less wealthy (it used to do) The cafe stopped serving food at 15:00 ‘because we close at 17:00’ she told us, so while we had sauntered through our visit at a leisurely pace we were not able to have a meal which we were planning. It would have been very helpful to have been told this on arrival. Booking-in is internet dependent - providing a booking reference number is not sufficient so we had some initial difficulty due to phone problems. What is the point of a booking reference number if it can’t be tracked back? Sorrow felt that the gorgeous delft blue toilets and basins of latter years had been replaced with standard white fittings.

Very worth seeing and insightful. Historical background, also with the economic importance for the Netherlands, is very well brought closer to one.

If you are fond of ceramics this place will totally absorb you and you will never want to leave. The path dedicated to visitors has been organized in a careful and meticulous way, starting from the feeling of belonging of contributes to the greatness of the brand. From raw materials, to the design-creative flow, to the videos that position the product, to the collections, to the company milestones, to the factory path up to retail. Nothing is given to chance to make it clear what makes the product unique and how many heads (and hands) it takes to make it important. I recommend it not only to fans of the genre, but also to those who work in HR, marketing and branding.
