Plaza Mayor
The name of the plaza has changed over time. It has been known as "Plaza del Arrabal", "Plaza de la Constitución", "Plaza Real", "Plaza de la República" and now "Plaza Mayor". These names reflect events, history and reign in Spanish history. "Plaza del Arrabal" was the original name of the present day "Plaza Mayor". The "Plaza del Arrabal" was once the site of the most popular marketplace until the end of 15th century. Following the Constitution of 1812, all major plazas in Spain were renamed "Plaza de la Constitución". It also held this name 1820 to 1823, 1833 to 1835, 1840 to 1843, and 1876 to 1922. When the Borbón king was restored in 1814, it became known as the "Plaza Real". In 1873, the name changed to "Plaza de la República". At the end of the Spanish Civil War the plaza received its present name of "Plaza Mayor".

We have been on several tours recently and have been very pleased with all of the guides, but Beatriz, our guide for the Royal Palace tour was exceptional. She was so personable and had excellent knowledge about the history of Spain and its monarchs. Her descriptions of the places we were seeing really brought history to life. I feel motivated at read up more on the history of the Spanish Royals. After the tour we were chatting with Beatriz and I mentioned there was a show I would like to see. She showed me how to obtain tickets and my husband and I had a great night at the theater. I would definitely recommend this tour of the magnificent Royal Palace and very definitely recommend our fantastic guide, Beatriz.

We had a group of 4 adults from the US, on a trip to Spain. Jesus did a great job telling stories, keeping us engaged, and making us laugh! It was a great time!

The tour starts at a travel company's office about 15 min from the palace. We were late starting and it ran closer to 2.5 hours (we'd made a lunch reservation and even though we'd given ourselves an hour grace period we barely made it on time). That said, the tour was great. Our guide was friendly and knowledgeable. I might argue that he provided too much information and that's why we ran so late but some people may be looking for that level of detail. The palace itself is lovely and has a lot of history. I would absolutely recommend this tour and the attraction to others; just make sure you don't have anything planned for at least an hour after it's scheduled to be over.

Our tour guide Rodriguiz was not knowledgeable about the palace in Madrid. He treated our group like we were teenagers and made too many jokes which include included profanity. He spent too much time on antics like showing us how the king and queen should wave which ended up in him giving the middle finger. He skipped many of the rooms in the palace for no reason. When he asked the group, what was the largest palace in the world my daughter answered Romania, which is correct and he said very loudly that is wrong. At the end of the tour, we asked for an explanation and we discovered by looking online that the Romanian Palace is indeed the largest castle, but not the largest royal palace. After we made this discovery, he said I’m still right and was very condescending and rude to us. He also spent so much time showing us how a queen would walk up the steps in a very tight dress. I did not find this Tour interesting or insightful. The palace however, was beautiful and I would like to visit again with another Tour guide.
