Then, we continue our trip to later visit the still alive Incan town of Ollantaytambo, where our Tour Guide guided us around its Incan fortres and explains us about its purpose and history. The town and fortres are strategically located overlooking the beautiful valley! This major ruin site is known as the best surviving example of the Incan urban planning and engineering. It is admired for its huge steep terraces guarding the Incan fortress and for being one of the couple places where Spaniards lost a major battle during their conquest!

What an amazing experience. We did a tour with tierras vivas and had the best experience. We are more than happy with the tour we did in the sacred valley. The views are stanning and the local people are very welcoming and friendly. Our guide JD was knowledgeable and fun. He arrived on time and took care of us all day. We also visited the textile factory and saw how they create the colors and make blankets and clothes then we had an amazing lunch, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!

Our package included the Cusco city tour, a few archeological sites just outside Cusco, a drive down the sacred valley, including stops at Pisac and Ollantaytambo archaeological sites, and an overnight stay in Machu Picchu pueblo and tour of Machu Picchu. Tierras Vivas took care of all of the travel, including booking the flight to/from Lima, driving us down the Sacred Valley, and arranging train travel to/from Machu Picchu; they also arranged lodging in Cusco and Machu Picchu. I was worried about setting up domestic travel in a foreign country and language, and it was really nice that Tierras Vivas was able to set this up for us. Our guide, José, was excellent. He spoke excellent English and always got us where we needed to go without worry, which my companions who spoke no Spanish appreciated a ton. He knew the answer to any question we had, and we had a lot! Inka, Colonial, or modern history; geography, climate, culture, travel, architecture--I don't think we once stumped him, and I was very impressed. But more than that, he is a very fun guy! He was friendly and funny from the get-go. He was interested in where we lived, what we did, and shared with us stories from his own life. It honestly felt like having a tour with a great new friend who knew how to get around and everything else we would want to know. I couldn't have asked for a better experience.

  • Beautiful scenery, great team!

We did the 3 day Ausangate trek and a stop at Palccoyo mountain and what an amazing experience! The scenery was incredible but the porters, the chief, and of course our guide Elvis was what made the experience. Elvis was so knowledgeable about the area, the history, and helping us adjust to the altitude. He knew what we needed for our symptoms. We could’ve not asked for a better tour guide for our first time in Peru! I highly recommend Tierras Vivas! Definitely ask for Elvis too!

My wife and I decided to take a vacation with friends since i’m deploying to the middle east for a year. So why not visit one of the 7 wonders of the world. We blindly researched and went with a company. this was the best decision we made. Efraín Was a great tour guide. He took his time to explain culture to our group and friends. Was very patient and knowledgeable. I would recommend this to anyone! Overall a great experience!!!

I booked my trip to Peru in January 2018 and impatiently waited six months for my trip to begin. Tierras Vivas did a good job communicating both from their on-line assistant as well as via email, although I did notice that when I communicated in Spanish, the answers I got were a bit more thorough. I would encourage TV to reach out to travelers right before their journeys to ensure they have all the information on their trip, as well as emergency telephone numbers. I crafted a custom itinerary, based on my availability for travel, TV was very willing to assist. There was a driver waiting for me at the Cusco airport, even though I was a day early. The driver transported me to my first hotel, which started before my actual tour began, then came back to get me to the hotel where I spent most of the rest of my time in the Cusco area. I spent a day in the Sacred Valley (Valle Sagrado), visiting Pisaq, Ollantaytambo, and Chinchero- TV arranged for all the necessary tickets we needed for admission to the sites. I did have one hiccup in Pisaq, where I was left behind at the site, but was able to get assistance from another tour operator to connect me back with my group. That day, we had an amazing lunch at El Alhambra, while we continued to tour. The end of the day was in Chinchero, learning the amazing methods a weaving collective use to transform llama, sheep, and alpaca wool into fantastic woven goods. We were even able to check in with the weavers' small pack of cuy (guinea pigs)! The next day was the Inti Raymi festival, which is an amazing spectacle honoring the Sun God, Inti, and celebrating the Winter Solstice (southern hemisphere, remember). The TV crew did a fantastic job watching out for a large group of us in huge crowds, where pickpockets abound. Aside from securing us prime viewing locations, they kept us safe while we watched the ceremonies at Q'uori Cancha, Plaza de Armas, and Sayacsayhuaman. There were a number of TV employees scanning the crowds around us, while were focused on the festivities. TV provided us box lunches to eat while transferring between ceremony locations. If you're planning a visit to Cusco, aim to be there around this time of the year. There are tons of parades that happen in an around Plaza de Armas in the days leading up to Inti Raymi. The next day my guide picked me up very early to begin a one-day trek on the Inka Trail (Camino Sagrado or Camino de Inkas). We drove to the train station in Ollantaytambo where we took the 6:30 Inka Rail departure. TV arranged the tickets, as well as the permission we needed to debark the train at KM104 and the necessary permits to be on the trail, since capacities on the trail and at Macchu Picchu are limited. My guide, Yesenia Carreno, did a fantastic job guiding me through the hike, teaching me about the flora and fauna, the history of the trail and the sites we encountered along the way such as Winay Wayna, as well as taught me about the Inca culture. We began on the trail around 7:30 and reached the Sun Gate (Inti Puyka) around 2 p.m., where I could catch my first glimpse of Macchu Picchu, which was amazing. My guide and I spent some time touring, then caught a bus down to Aguas Calientes where we purchased the bus tickets we'd need for the next morning to return to Macchu Picchu, she guided me to my hotel (Hostal de Renato), and we set a time to meet for dinner. TV set up our dinner reservation, which was one less thing to worry about. Hostal de Renato was pretty basic, but the water in the shower was hot and the sheets were clean, which is all I needed. The next morning we joined a gigantic line of people waiting to get on buses to Macchu Picchu; we joined the queue around 5 a.m. and were on the 18th bus heading up the mountain, which is about a 30 minute ride. My guide assisted me in the crush of people getting through the gate, and we continued our discussion on Inca culture, building methods, and pretty much anything else. She had to leave Macchu Picchu on an earlier train and left me at the site to continue exploring and spending some quiet time contemplating, which is exactly what I wanted. Around lunchtime, I took a bus back down to Aguas Calientes to browse the shops and get some lunch. The lunch at Totos was grilled trout, and it was fantastic. They also have a huge buffet, which is pretty cheap (s/60). My train left at 2:30 which left me plenty of time to pick up the small duffel I left in the care of the hotel. TV arranged for a driver to meet me at the station in Ollantaytambo to take me back to Cusco. The driver turned on his WiFi Hotspot for me, so I could send emails to TV to set up a day trip for my final day in Cusco. TV responded quickly, and before I headed out for dinner in Cusco, they had already arranged a day trip to Maras Moray, Chinchero, and the Salt harvesting operation -- a bargain at $20. Finally, TV arranged a driver to get me back to the airport in time for my flight, with a quick visit from Edwin, the owner of TV, who was a constant point of contact and was always around to take care of issues for his travelers. This was an amazing adventure. Tierras Vivas helped me accomplish a dream. They did everything to assist me -- there were very few surprises, and even those were easily surmountable. If you're looking for a great operation, Tierras Vivas is it.
