Saeva Dupka

Saeva Dupka Cave’s five halls and 400 metres of corridors offer some of the most beautiful cave formations in the country. The cave has hosted many choral music performances, thanks to the excellent acoustic conditions. Saeva dupka was named after two brothers, Seyu and Sae, who used it as a hiding place during the Ottoman occupation of Bulgaria. Recent excavations have shown the cave was inhabited since Roman times. Saeva dupka is one of the 100 Tourist Sites of Bulgaria.

Ledenika Cave

Ledenika is a cave in the Northwestern parts of the Balkan Mountains, 16km away from the Bulgarian town of Vratsa, its entrance being at 830m above sea level. It features an abundance of galleries and impressive karst formations including stalactites and stalagmites, dating back a thousand years. The cave is about 300m long and contains ten separate halls. The biggest one is the Concert Hall. The way to it is through the Passage of Sinners. Only those whose heart is pure can pass through it. Once the cave was full of water but now only a small lake has remained - the Lake of Wishes. The legend says that if you dip your hand in the ice-cold water of the lake and make a wish, the wish will come true.

We booked a day trip to Saeva dupka and Ledenika caves with Philip. It was an amazing adventure to explore something different and to get out of the city. Philip was an exceptional host, very knowledgeable, personable with outstanding hospitality and made you feel safe cruising the country side. Highly recommend you book this tour thanks to Philip. I would give our tour 10 stars ⭐️. My husband and I did Saeva dupka and Ledenika Caves Day Tour from Sofia Bulgaria. Our Guide was Philip. He was so personable and knowledgeable. We learned so much from him about the country of Bulgaria. The caves were absolutely stunning. A must see. With Philip as our guide he made Bulgaria the best out of the 10 Balkan countries we toured this trip. Because we learned so much from him. He advised us the best places for a local experience. Bulgaria is amazing. Thank you Philip for being a highlight of our vacation!

A really good experience with a really good guide who explained the history of the caves. The guide was very welcoming and I can recommend Daniel who was my guide the whole day, and he is good at telling interesting facts about the caves especially on how they were created by Nature during the tour.

Had a nice day, where we visited 2 caves. However, you are only half an hour in the caves and we had the misfortune that they did the laser show instead of further into the caves. The laser show is not much and come from an old era and is therefore not impressive. An average festival has better lasers and after all you come for the caves. Otherwise, the caves look beautiful. However, you are driving more than you are in the caves. Although driving through the mountains makes up for a lot with all those beautiful views. Furthermore, we had a private guide who drove us around and took care of the translation because the guides in the caves cannot speak English. All in all it was a successful trip and we enjoyed it.

This was a wonderful trip! My 12 year old and I had a great time. Our guide was outstanding! His English was impeccable! Lunch was at a hotel and was very tasty...beware of HUGE servings!! Everyone was very knowledgeable and it made for the perfect day!!!

The best tour I had in a while.
You get to see two interesting caves and the amazing Balkan mountain around Vratsa!
The first cave was unique and relaxing, and the second one has a really nice laser show.

My guide Mike, was amazing.
He is well informed about the place, very polite, and told me a lot about Bulgaria.
We had a lot of fun talking together.

Recommended tour if your like caves and mountains.

This tour involves visiting two different cave systems, with lunch at Vratsa in-between. The first system is Saeva dupka, which is the lesser-known of the two. The facilities are very rudimentary, but the caves fascinating. In contrast, Ledenika is a professional, well-organised, tourist attraction, backed by substantial EU money. To be honest, I found the first site - Saeva dupka - more authentic and enjoyable, whereas Ledenika had coloured lights and an unnecessary laser show. Lunch was at the Seagull restaurant just outside Vratsa, and was of a high standard it's an upmarket hotel. We had made good time so I asked if we could explore Vratsa for 30 minutes or so and the excellent guide, Georgi, was happy to accommodate. Vratsa is not really a tourist town per se, but has some historical monuments and provides an interesting contrast to Sopia. I think it is a bonus and I would explicitly name and include it as a short stop in this excursion as it deserves to be better known.
