The Circus
The Berkeley Memorial was erected in 1883 to honor Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee, marking her 50 years on the throne. This was a common practice in British colonies to commemorate the monarch’s reign. Time 10 mins. drive through The monument was donated by Sir Thomas Berkeley Minshull, a British governor of St. Kitts, hence the name “Berkeley Memorial.” It symbolizes the colonial era when Britain exerted influence over the Caribbean islands, including St. Kitts. Designed as a circular traffic roundabout, it reflects British colonial urban planning that aimed to organize city traffic and create focal points. The monument itself features a classical style with a column and a decorative top, embodying Victorian-era design. The Circus has evolved into the social heart of Basseterre, hosting public events, markets, and celebrations. It is a gathering place for locals and visitors alike, especially during major events like Independence Day celebrations, cultural festivals, and parades.
Independence Square
Independence Square in St. Kitts, formerly known as Pall Mall Square, has a rich history that dates back to the mid-18th century. The square is located on the eastern side of Basseterre, bordering Newtown. It was renamed on September 19, 1983, to commemorate the birth of the new nation of St. Christopher and Nevis . In 1714 shows a pasture just east of Fort Street with houses only on its western side . In 1750, the government acquired the land, and it quickly became the administrative, commercial, and social center of Basseterre . The square was the site of a market where enslaved Africans were sold, and the basement of a building on the south side of the square was used to temporarily quarter them . Over the years, the square has seen various changes and developments. Some buildings, like the Court House and Public Library, have been destroyed by fire and rebuilt . Despite these changes, Independence Square remains a significant historical and cultural landmark in St. Kitts .
