Otari-Wilton's Bush Native Botanic Garden
We begin our journey at Otari-Wilton’s Bush - one hundred hectares of ancient and regenerating forest and New Zealand’s only botanical garden dedicated solely to native plants. Designated a six-star Garden of International Significance by the New Zealand’s Gardens Trust of the Royal New Zealand Institute of Horticulture, Otari-Wilton’s Bush allows us to introduce you to what the landscape of New Zealand was like for early Maori and European settlers. Walking across the skybridge, you will be treated to views across the canopy while your friendly and knowledgeable guide introduces you to some of the unique flora and fauna endemic to this country and the challenges they have faced to survive. We regularly see beautiful native bird species like Tui, Kaka, Kakariki, Kereru and, occasionally, Karearea, all of which were extinct or endangered in the Wellington region only 25 years ago.
Next, we carry on through the suburbs and towards the south coast. Turning off the main road, we utilise our private access through Terawhiti Station, one of the oldest and largest stations in New Zealand. We’ll likely see sheep, cows and goats on the drive up the hill, before being treated to stunning views across the Cook Strait, Kaikoura Ranges and the South Island once we reach the top. We then follow the ridgeline road that was created for the imposing Project West Wind – a 62 turbine strong wind farm that generates enough electricity to power all the houses in the Wellington region. This city is known as Windy Welly for a reason! Your guide will explain how this collaboration was essential in keeping the farming operation going in what are challenging and harsh conditions and added another chapter to the long, storied history of Terawhiti.

Great tour with a very knowledgeable tour guide Dixie. We had perfect weather and the tour was exactly as described. The seals were very cool to watch in there. Natural habitat.

This tour was one of the highlights of our time in Wellington. Our guide was spectacular — incredibly knowledgeable, friendly, and with the perfect personality for a tour like this. They kept the whole experience fun and engaging from start to finish. One thing I really appreciated was that the tour included more than just the drive to the coast. We made a stop to see birds and native trees at the botanical garden area, which was a really nice addition and a great way to learn about the local ecosystem. Along the way, the views from the windmills were absolutely stunning, with incredible scenery across the coastline and the Cook Strait. The best part was getting to see the seals up close in their natural habitat. Watching them relaxing and playing along the rocky shore was such a unique experience. The landscape out there feels wild and remote, and it’s amazing that it’s so close to the city. The tour also travels through private farmland and down to the rugged coast, which adds to the sense of adventure. Our guide even had a great little treat waiting for us at the end, which was a thoughtful touch and a perfect way to wrap up the trip. One thing to keep in mind: there are no bathrooms once you get out to the remote coastal area, so plan ahead. But honestly, it’s well worth it — the scenery, wildlife, and overall experience make it a fantastic outing. Highly recommend this tour if you’re visiting Wellington and want to see some incredible wildlife and landscapes!

A long but interesting drive up over a mountain and across the top to get access to the beach and a lot of seals. Can get close for photos. Interesting but a long, arduous drive

Sarah was an excellent guide, generous with her detailed explanations of flora, fauna and the natural history of Wellington. We learnt so much from her extensive knowledge and really enjoyed how she delivered the key information necessary to the trip. The seals were so lovely and relaxed that we had to hold ourselves back from giving them a big hug (v bad idea!), but we had a ball just watching them. Totally recommend!

JUST BOOK IT!!!! It is a smaller group adventure, where you are driven in a comfortable Mercedes van. Ask for Greg as your driver; he's fantastic. He's kind, funny, soft spoken, delivers tons of information about anything you can think of. He navigates difficult terrain exceptionally well. The tour goes through private farmland to reach the fur seals on the coast. Spectacular scenery everywhere you look, and the fur seals are so enjoyable to watch. Greg helped point them out, as they blend into the rocks very well. You will have many chances to take a winery tour in this region. When you are in Wellington, forget the wine tour and take the seal tour instead; you won't regret it. Tell him that Kim from Florida sent you and sends regards. JUST BOOK IT!!
