In modern Bulgaria there are several enthusiasts who have rescued these breeds and some of them are ready to introduce you to these wonderful rare animals and to tell you what care should be taken for them in a specially created Center of rare breeds, the Association and the farm. Since the beginning of the 1990s, the association has begun to work to save the authentic Karakachan dog and the other two breeds of Karakachans - the sheep and the horse which were completely destroyed during socialism. There is the main herd of original Karakachan sheep, thanks to whose creation the breed was saved from extinction. A herd of the Kalofer long-haired goat was also set up to preserve some of its most typical representatives. The fun photosession with the best representatives of the breeds is also awaiting you with the unique degustation of the bio food products, produced by traditional authentic technology.

An experience of a lifetime with unique off-the-beaten-path tours
The rocky area and green land make the waterfall very charming. Its height is about 20-25m and the water falls vertically and crashes on a small scale, forming a shallow pond. The waterfall is easily accessible from Vlahi (about 15 minutes from the village), but getting to Vlahi might be difficult because the path is dirt and no asphalt is laid. Seeing the waterfalls from below is a memorable experience. To reach the foot, however, you will have to go down the very steep and rocky slope very carefully. It is a slightly extreme adventure, but definitely worth it.

I want to start by saying the issue with the timing was partly my fault, as I misunderstood the information despite messaging beforehand and response wasn't received early enough to cancel. However, I do think the website could be clearer, especially regarding meeting times and locations. I regularly book activities on Viator and I’m used to seeing this information stated much more clearly. Originally, I wanted to visit the farm in Vlahi, but unfortunately it couldn’t be accommodated with our availability, so it has been arranged for another date in Sofia. I did appreciate the flexibility and effort to make it work. That said, I was extremely disappointed by the actual experience. I was expecting a traditional farm, but instead it felt more like a very small piece of land with animals fitted into limited space so kids could see them with Airbnbs available for booking. The animals seemed fed and cared for, but there was little shelter from the rain and not much room for them to roam freely, which personally is not what I would call an authentic farm experience as per the picture displayed. Unfortunately the weather was rainy as well, which didn’t help. The hosts did prepare some local specialities for us to taste, which was a nice touch, although starting the day with rakia was definitely unexpected! Still, the effort was there, and the hosts themselves were kind, welcoming and funny. Overall, while I appreciated the hospitality and flexibility, I wouldn’t personally recommend this experience, especially considering the price. I still believe the Vlahi location may have been much more authentic but will never know.
