Zuihoden
Zuihoden is also known as the Mausoleum of Date Masamune who was the first lord of the Sendai Domain. He was also known for being a great architect and is known for having designed this building during the Momoyama Period. Zuihoden is a riot of gorgeous wood carvings and panels as well as some pretty art work and you can also go for a walk around the grounds. The paths are shaded by beautiful cedar trees which are also mean to be a symbol of the longevity of the Date family.
Sendai Castle Guidance House
The Sendai Castle Ruins were the inspiration for a famous Japanese poem called ‘The moon over the desolate castle’ and this tells you all you need to know about their condition now. The ruins also do include a model of the original gate to give you a feel of how Sendai Castle would have looked in the days of old. There is also a small museum here that takes you through the history of the castle although don’t expect anything too grand as Sendai is not one of the cities in Japan that is best known for a complete or particularly impressive castle. If that is what you are looking for then there are plenty of other options in other cities.

5.00Yumi Yokoyama was very knowledgeable about the history, culture and little known secrets of Matsushima. We visited a really beautiful temple, garden, a few islands and the birthplace of haiku. It was an excellent experience, in a beautiful place with great company!

5.00Our guide Sanichi was very helpful in helping us explore Sendai! He took us to many historic sites around the city, and gave us detailed explanations and fun stories. We took the sightseeing bus around to Sendai Castle, and the Sendai Museum. It was a great time. Our guide spoke English with us, and we were also able to practice some Japanese phrases with him. Overall a fun time and would recommend for anyone looking to have a focused tour of the city.
A customized tour in the tsunami disaster area

5.00We wanted to see some of the area devastated by the 2011 tsunami but the ready-made tour of that area did not quite fit our schedule and interests. Happily the tour operator and the guide (Riko) came together to create a custom tour for us with two main elements: - The Okawa Elementary School - An oyster and sake festival in Matsushima (We paid for an extra hour to make it fit.) Riko was well-prepared (including being a sake specialist) and speaks excellent English. It took some effort to make this custom tour come together but we were very pleased with the result.

5.00Riko was an excellent guide! We had never booked a private tour before and weren't sure what to expect, but by the end of the day we both agreed that we made the right call. Riko is very energetic, fun and friendly. She knew so much fascinating information about Matsushima, from ancient history to pop-culture lore, and we got so much out of our day trip from Sendai. Had we just gone on our own, we would never have learned so much!

5.00Riko-san was a wonderful guide! Very friendly and knowledgeable. They made sure we had authentic Japanese experiences and provided context to some of the area’s cultural sites and norms. We greatly enjoyed our time in the beautiful natural wonderland that is Matsushima Bay, with Riko-san making it an unforgettable experience.
