It was great to go to a shop in Matsuyama that everyone in the know knew! We tended to focus on tourist spots, but we also wanted to go to some old shops!

We were guided to several interesting food shops in the old town. The business owners are friendly. We bought some local products.

Walking around Matsuyama castle, our guide showcased a few local grocers and shops that are important to the food culture in the city. My favourite stop was a local grocery store called 大徳商店 (Daitoku), which uses hand drawn signage to interact with patrons. They also have a spectacular selection of fruits. If you're someone who enjoys niche experiences, this tour is for you! Just remember to wear comfortable shoes!

We visited 5 local shops including the Japanese sweets and mochi shop that have a history of over 50 years. It was a nice stroll far from touristic places in the local neighborhood. The only thing is that if you are taking it between the breakfast and lunch times you will be probably too full to enjoy all the fresh foods that are in the shops. But it’s a great opportunity to buy some souvenirs to take back home!

We did a 90 min walk through a small shopping district that focused on regionally produced fresh foods. Two shops of particular note were a family owned mochi shop and a daifuku shop. Both were hand made and were super fresh and delicious! The tour covered a small area and was an easy stroll, appropriate for all ages.
