Located one hour away from Puerto Vallarta is El Tuito, settled in the green mountains of Cabo Corrientes municipality.
The mountains surrounding El Tuito are a transition zone for various bird species, many species in southern Mexico and Central America have their northernmost limits in this region. Climate here is temperate throughout the year and among the vegetation of the area conifers are abundant as well as oaks and walnuts, along with various fruit trees that provide food and home to the wide variety of birds that we can find here, among which stand out the yellow grosbeak, the blue mockingbird, the elegant and the Citreoline trogon and the endemic flagellated flycatcher.

5.00This was my third birding trip with Ecotours Vallarta, and once again they delivered an outstanding experience. Our late-November outing to Rancho Primavera — one of the truly great birding spots in west-central Mexico — was excellent. We logged 55 species in total, including a few lifers for me, and the pace of the day was relaxed but productive. Our guide, Michael, is a skilled birder and also brings deep knowledge of local plants, trees, butterflies, and other wildlife. Ecotours runs their trips with a thoughtful, sustainable approach, and it really shows. As a repeat customer, I wholeheartedly recommend them to anyone who wants to explore the natural beauty and wildlife of this tropical region.

5.00Excellent trip. More than birdwatching. Lunch in Tuito was very authentic and delicious. Michael, our guide did a tremendous job. Group size was small. The locations visited were very birdy. Definitely recommend this excursion.

5.00I had a great time visiting El Tuito and Rancho Primavera with Cynthia. She was a great tour guide - not only was she friendly and knowledgeable, but she added special touches like taking us to a local bakery for fresh bread along the way. We found a lot of great birds, and I also felt like this was the most authentically Mexican day I spent on my vacation, in the mountains and away from all the resorts. Cynthia also gave me some tips on birding areas I could check out near my resort which proved very productive.

5.00We had some great birding! The landscape up there is beautiful and we ended up seeing around 80 species. Pick up and drop off was super easy and our guide Cynthia was super knowledgeable. We very much enjoyed the early morning pit stop at the roadside panadería!

5.00We went on the Sierra Madre Highland bird tour with Cynthia. She was so friendly and engaging and she is an excellent bird guide who is extremely knowledgeable about the natural history of the area. We went to El Tuito and Rancho Primavera, an amazing hotspot for birders. We will definitely go on another birding tour when we return!

5.00We toured the Macaw Sanctuary with Cynthia in late December - she was awesome!! Our family group of 9 took a private tour. Cynthia picked us up early (5:45) and drove us up the mountain in their van. It was a fun and curvy ride and beautiful sunrise over the green hills and and mountains. She expertly guided us on an easy, short hike to view macaws and other birds. We are not birders but found so much enjoyment and beauty on this trip. It was a highlight of our visit to Mexico. Thank you, Cynthia, for your upbeat, knowledgeable, and adaptive presence.
A must for serious birders and novices alike!

5.00This is my third time going on this specific excursion and I would return again. It is a fantastic opportunity to see striking birds that you will not see in the city of PV. In addition to the stunning birds we saw out in the "wild," the private wildlife and bird sanctuary near El Tuito is a very special place with over 265+ species of birds. The tour leaders are very knowledgeable and are very invested in ensuring you see as many interesting birds as possible. I highly recommend Ecotours. This is my 8th excursion with them and it never disappoints. Don't miss this tour! Take your bug spray, sun lotion and a hat and enjoy!

5.00This is the third birding tour we have enjoyed with EcoTours Vallarta and the second time with our exceptional guide Michael. It does not get any better when you finally, after 50 years loving birding, get to see your “goal bird” in a perfect setting! Michael guided us to a Painted Bunting - and many more life list birds! We could not have been more thrilled, as well as impressed by his consummate knowledge of bird life. Thank you so much! We’ll be back - with friends and family!

5.00We took this tour through EcoTours with Fernando as our guide. We had an amazing morning spotting almost 60 species of birds and exploring the Mcaw bird sanctuary. Fernando took his time to make sure each person in the group saw the birds, helped to call them in at times, and shared his vast knowledge of bird and butterflies as we traveled to our various locations. It was a great way to get off the beaten path and explore local birds plus we even stopped in El Tuito for a little snack and to check off our bird lists. Great day and this tour is highly recommended for experienced birders and even non birders(we took my husband and my girlfriend’s boyfriend and they both enjoyed the tour). Thank you Fernando!

5.00The Sierra Madre birding tour with Cynthia was awesome. The day started with a stop to grad some delicious Mexican sweet bread for breakfast. Our first stop was at a small stream. Cynthia was great at spotting birds and patiently answered our questions. We saw a few orioles, different species of sparrows and blue grosbeaks. After the brief stop we proceeded to Rancho Primavera which is a haven for rescued macaws and parrots who are trained and released into the wild. We saw the military macaws, lilac crowned and yellow headed parrots. We saw a total of 57 species of birds on the trip and it was fun filling out the bird checklist with Cynthia at the end. Highly recommend for bird watching and bird photography
