Harrigan Centennial Hall

This amazing tour leaves nothing on the table, covering 4 of Sitka's top destinations. Our tour begins at the Harrigan Centennial Hall where you'll come aboard a comfortable full-size passenger van. We'll head south on Sitka's road system. Along the way we might spot bald eagles in the treetops and Sitka Black Tail deer grazing on brush. We’ll contour Silver Bay, a body of water surrounded by high mountains. In the later months Humpback and Minke whales can sometimes be seen here. With time and weather permitting we’ll stop here for photos. Near the end of the road system we'll arrive at The Fortress of the Bear. This non-profit rescue facility is home to seven Alaskan bears. Here we'll get up close and personal (on a platform we view them from a safe distance) with our six rescued beautiful Alaskan Coastal Brown Bears and three Black Bears--the only black bears on Baranof Island. Our next stop is The Alaskan Raptor Center. This rehabilitation center for birds of prey has a state of the art flight room and home to multiple rescued Eagles, owls and other birds of prey found in Southeast Alaska. The we'll travel to Sitka National Historical Park; this protected area of temperate rain forest stretches out to a peninsula and offers multiple, easily accessible trail loops that contour Indian river and the Eastern Channel waters. Totem poles punctuate these trails. This park is also the site of a battle between the Sheetka Kwan Kiksadi Clan and Russian American troops, during the 19th century. Our guests can choose to walk through the park or a visit to the park’s amazing cultural center, which offers its own onsite interpreters, as well as exhibits and demonstrations for traditional techniques such as carving, working with fur, beading, and metal working. To cap off this tour our final stop will be for refreshments. This locally owned and operated pub is located right in the heart of historic downtown Sitka and offers a variety of beers. Enjoy flavors from all around Alaska on their ever-changing taps. Depending on taste (and age ), non-alcoholic beverages are also available. Enjoy both in this family friendly establishment.

Alaska Raptor Center

Growing from a backyard, volunteer-run operation, the Alaska Raptor Center has become Alaska's foremost bald eagle hospital and educational center, as well as one of the state's premier visitor attractions. Each year, the Alaska Raptor Center provides medical treatment to 100-200 injured bald eagles and other birds. Our goal is to release our patients back into the wild; some, however, are injured so severely they could not survive in the wild even after rehabilitation. These birds may join our Raptors-in-Residence, providing excitement and education for more than 36,000 annual visitors and for the 15,000 schoolchildren we reach through the Adopt-A-Raptor program and Classroom Presentations around the country. The Alaska Raptor Center's 17-acre campus borders the Tongass National Forest, a temperate coastal rainforest, and the Indian River in Sitka, Alaska, and features award-winning natural habitats for our 19 Raptors-in-Residence.

Our tour guide, Mike, was a local guy so we not only saw bears, raptors, and totems, but also learned all about the history of Sitka! We were at each of the 3 stops for 1/2 hour which was just enough time. The tour was beautiful, informative, and fun!

We easily found Baranof Tour coordinator in front of Centennial Hall and immediately met Mike, our guide/driver who gave us helpful shopping tips even before our departure. We were a group of ten, and Mike guided us with info and humor with excellent timing, especially for a cruise tour. The bear rescue center was full of great photo ops and great info about their work; same for the Alaska Raptor center that allowed us to see the animals up close. Both places are doing great work. The Totem park was a delightful chance to get outside and see impressive poles. All in all this 2.5 hour tour hit impressive sights in a time efficient way with great educational commentary by Mike. While he might not be able to every time, Mike had the flexibility to drop us at the cruise terminal, saving us a cold wait of st least 20 mins for the cruise shuttle—we were very grateful for that.

We booked this tour 6 weeks ago from Australia and we were relieved to find that everything happened like clockwork!! After taking the free shuttle from our cruise ship into town, we were met enthusiastically at the prescribed spot by a very cheerful young lady before Mike our tour guide showed us to his van. He was incredibly knowledgeable and was eager to share with us all he knew about the places we visited & the history of Sitka. The raptor experience was really good although there was only one bird which did a quick ‘fly-around’ while we were there. We were amazed at the size of the birds and it was fun to see owls which we’d previously only seen in picture books. We felt quite sad seeing the brown bears though. While we appreciate that they’re being well-cared for at the facility, their surroundings were quite depressing with what appeared to be a lot of rubbish in their enclosure. Maybe the old car tyres and the neon coloured balls were playthings for them? I don’t recall seeing any trees in the enclosure but it’s likely that over the quite long time the bears have been living there that they’ve destroyed any trees that may have been there themselves! While we didn’t venture into the woods at the National Park, we did spend some time in the Information Centre where there were many totem poles to be seen, and the stories around them were explained in detail. All-in-all this tour was definitely worth taking although it’s also worth knowing that while the van is comfortable enough, it’s pretty squeezy for anyone over 1.8 metres tall.

We had the absolute pleasure of doing The Best of Sitka tour with Darby and she was exceptional from start to finish. As a local, her knowledge of Sitka and its history was incredible, and you could really tell how passionate she is about what she does. We were amazed to learn she has been working in the tourism industry since she was just thirteen years old! Darby was knowledgeable in every aspect of the tour — from the raptors and bears through to the fascinating totems and local culture. She explained everything so beautifully and intelligently while still making the tour fun and engaging. What made the experience even more special was her kindness and thoughtfulness. I have hip mobility issues and she very kindly went out of her way to drop us back at the cruise terminal, which I was extremely grateful for. A lovely girl, incredibly intelligent, professional and caring. She truly made our day in Sitka unforgettable. Highly recommend this tour, especially if you are lucky enough to have Darby as your guide! Michelle and Patrick, Perth, Western Australia.

Wow!!! What a wonderful tour with Katie as our fabulous tour guide. She explained the upcoming tour in detail, so we were ready to experience the “Fortress of the Bear” park. Katie introduced us to all the bears, by name, with their reasons for being there. It endeared me to these beautiful animals. The bears were well taken care of and happy! Katie then took us to the National park and introduced us to all the plants and trees. She pointed out eagles and their nests. She seemed one with nature. I could tell she loves her job! She knows her job well, and is very protective of our group. She would watch over us to make sure we were all taken care of. I highly recommend this tour with Baranof, and please ask for Katie!! She will give you a whole spiel about everything you want to know about Sitka. What a great employee you have there.
