  Disappointed by the Turtle Experience at Playa Piskadó, But no complaints with the Tour Company and Guide We booked a tour to Playa Piskadó expecting a meaningful experience with sea turtles, but unfortunately, it left us feeling disappointed especially in how the wildlife is treated. Yes, you may see a couple of turtles swimming, but the beach is very rocky and packed with tourists. Every time a turtle appears, a crowd of about 15 people swarms around it, giving the animal no space to move naturally. The water is murky from people throwing in fish chum to attract the turtles. It doesn’t feel healthy or respectful to the animals. There’s also a local man on the dock or in the water who splashes and bangs a machete to call the turtles, appearing to have trained them to respond to the sound. He feeds them, then draws them close so you can take a photo—but beware: he demands money afterward, even if you didn’t ask for his help. The tour guide, however, did a great job. She spoke about the country and pointed out local landmarks along the drive, which added value to the trip. The bus was clean, on time for both pickup and drop-off, and water and chips were provided. Like most tours, you spend a bit of extra time picking up guests from various resorts, but that’s expected. Overall, yes—you will likely see turtles. But the way it’s managed is not in the best interest of the animals. Playa Piskadó feels more like a staged photo-op than a true wildlife encounter, and that’s a shame. This area should be better protected, not exploited.

  Be prepared to not snorkel and get harrassed by one of the locals on the beach to pay him $10 per picture to put a turtle on your stomach. The driver is rude we spoke each time getting on the bus and he never spoke back.

• Cancelled and Replaced

  This tour was cancelled due to not enough people booked on it, So they replaced it with another tour that had an additional stop to the caves. We took it anyway, because the transportation cost just to go to swim with the turtles was more than the tour cost. Anita our tour guide was fantastic, friendly and informative. But, because of the extra stop at the caves, which we decided to not go in to, we spent less time at the turtle swim and beach -

  Our cruise ship arrived a little later than our check in time(15min). It was very easy to contact via tour who communicated directly with the excursion vendor, and kept us informed via WhatsApp. They reassured us they would wait. They did. They were easy to find and communicate with. When you’re booking things in places, you’ve never been to, it can be stressful, but they took the stress out of it all. The tour itself was excellent. See shuttle bus driver provide a good instruction for us at each location. The driver was multi lingual, which was helpful as there were English and Spanish, speaking folks on the bus. He did a great job of going back-and-forth between the two.

  The tour, the beach, the flamingos were all gravy, but the meat of the experience was the snorkeling with the turtles as well as a vast array of fish. The experience was well organized... rep was there right when I got off the ship and even the smallest of time changes, 15 minutes, was well communicated. The guide was very friendly and was a wealth of info. Overall... this 77 year old was glad to enjoy this bucket list experience.
