Korean alcohol is a lot more than just a green bottle of soju, which is diluted ethanol with artificial sweetener. Broadly, Korean alcohols are divided into Tak-ju (unfiltered rice wine), Cheong-ju (filtered clear rice wine) and So-ju (distilled spirit). Here, we will focus on our specialty, soju, but we can also taste other types too.
Samhae soju was a beloved choice of spirit among the noble class of Joseon dynasty(1392~1894). This luxurious alcohol had caused cult following, but the making was so resource(rice)-heavy that production had to stop during famines. The current master, Hyeonjong Kim had learned and practiced for more than 10 years under master Taeksang Kim who had inherited and kept the recipe in the family. Sadly, master Taeksang Kim passed away in 2021. We will have a privilege to taste the history.

Amazing tour/experience with Sam at his distillery. Really casual and easy going. Expert knowledge and amazing Soju produced by them (Three Pigs) As a Soju lover this really opened my field of vision to beyond the typical green bottles. Would 100% recommend this tour/experience to anyone who is slightly interested in soju or local liqueur

Really cool experience with delicious drinks and interesting facts about soju and surrounding traditions. Sam was a very welcoming, funny and knowledgeable host. Worth it even if you're not already a massive fan of soju!

Had a great time learning about and tasting what real soju is compared to what’s in our local grocery stores. Sam was really easy to talk to and is really kind! Highly recommend!

A really fun and fantastic experience! Low key and no frills, but a unique experience and good starter for our trip to teach us a bit about Korean spirits! Sam our host was great! Knowledgeable and entertaining.

We had such a great time with Sam at the soju tasting! We went in only knowing about the green bottle “soju” and left with so much more knowledge about the real soju. The atmosphere was intimate with only 6 other guests. Sam was easy-going and open to questions about soju and beyond, including Korean culture and society, best spots to eat, best places to drink, etc. We loved the unique experience so much that we purchased a bottle to go!

This was such a fun activity to do! Sam is a fantastic host and explain the Soju process very well. We loved hearing about the historical context as well. The best part was the conversation that flowed between our group and Sam as we enjoyed our Soju tasting. He was happy to talk to us about South Korean culture and answer any questions we had. To top it off Sam even gave us a detailed list of recommendations for dinner afterwards. Can’t say enough great things about this experience! So memorable.

I highly recommend this experience if you want to taste real, genuine soju and talk with people who are genuinely passionate about the art of soju making. This is an authentic distillery experience. It's in a crowded, no frills, bare bones basement with equipment neatly crammed in and brewing taking place around you as you talk. The room smells of yeast. The walls are bare concrete. The soju makers are here to make soju, not to mess around. They have been making this recipe for over 600 years. Don't expect a wine tasting in a wood panelled tasting room with soft music. People are in professional gear, not pretty uniforms with logos. This guys are legit and so is the soju! Highly recommended.

I had a great time during this tasting in Soju. Sam was extremely welcoming and responsive, with real kindness. He took the time to share not only his know-how around the Soju, but also valuable tips for visiting Seoul: neighborhoods to discover, good local addresses, etc. I particularly enjoyed the first part of the experience, which immerses us in the history of Soju and the whole manufacturing process, from fermentation to distillation. It was fascinating and very accessible, even without prior knowledge. The tasting itself was very interesting, with several varieties to discover, each with its own aromas and characteristics. We feel that it is done with passion and a lot of care. I highly recommend this experience to all curious people who want to discover a more artisanal and cultural facet of South Korea!
