Our mission is to educate inspire and empower people to a greater sense of awareness and knowledge through surfing. It is our job to help you feel comfortable, confident and have fun out there.
Lessons can be 1 on 1 or for a group up to 12 people.

5.00I can't thank Alvaro / Salty Water Surfing Co. enough... I am so, so grateful for the amazing surfing lessons they gave me during my week in Playa Hermosa. I had a a pretty scary surfing experience back home a couple years ago and have struggled with my anxiety in the water since. This trip changed everything for me. I learned the tools I needed to feel more confident in the water and the coaches, Juan and Alvaro helped me paddle out the back (for the first time) and catch some unbroken waves. I felt safe and accounted for the entire time I was out there with them. Their tips helped my partner and I actually progress and get out of some bad habits we had from trying to teach ourselves how to surf. I fell in love with surfing again because of them... I bought a new hard top board to surf at home the day after I came home from Costa Rica (and guess what... I feel so much more comfortable and confident in the water back home now, too... and I credit all of that to my lessons!!) It makes me so happy I am tearing up as I write this. Absolute 1000/10 experience – if you're headed to Costa Rica and you want to actually learn how to surf / progress, you have to get lessons from Salty Water Surfing Co!

5.00Absolutely amazing surf lessons with Álvaro and Juan! I booked together with two friends and had an unforgettable experience. From the very first moment, we felt incredibly welcome, safe, and perfectly taken care of. They explained all the basics and the rules in the water in a clear and motivating way, which gave us a lot of confidence right from the start. Álvaro took a very individual approach, gave constant, constructive feedback, and helped us improve so quickly. The surf sessions in the lineup were an absolute highlight and so much fun. I’m already looking forward to coming back to Playa Hermosa and surfing again with Álvaro and Juan. Thank you for these incredible days – you guys are simply the best! :)

5.00I had my very first surfing experience with Alvaro, and I honestly couldn’t have asked for a better instructor. Starting completely from zero, he helped me progress incredibly fast. After just a few lessons, I went from learning the basics to being out in the lineup and catching waves. Alvaro has an amazing eye for detail and is extremely pedagogical in the way he teaches. His feedback is clear, encouraging, and truly helps you improve quickly, while safety is always his top priority. I’m already looking forward to coming back for more lessons with him. If you’re considering surf lessons, I can warmly recommend Salt water surfing co. You won’t regret it.

5.00We had the most incredible surf lesson and cannot say enough good things about Alvaro! He taught my husband and me (both in our 50s) along with our kids—two in their early 20s and one in their late teens—and made it fun, encouraging, and confidence-building for all of us. Alvaro was patient, knowledgeable, and genuinely tuned in to each person’s ability and comfort level. From first pop-ups to improving technique, everyone felt supported and successful. This was a highlight of our trip and a memory we’ll talk about for many years. Such a great experience!

5.00Alvaro and his team are the best surf coaches in Playa Hermosa! I learned so much in just a week of lessons, truly cannot recommend enough! The location is gorgeous, and the waves are perfect for all levels while also enjoying time at the beach. A must book if you’re looking to surf in Costa Rica!

5.00I highly reccomend Salt Water Surfing Co! Alvaro has extensive knowlegde of surfing and the area. He is very attentive, patient and provides clear directions. WIth his instruction my surfing has progressed so much and he helped me get so many fun waves. Whether you're a begnnier or an advanced surfer you will learn a ton, always feel safe in the water and have a blast. You can tell he really cares and wants his students to do well. I can't thank him enough and this is the place to go if you're looking for surf lessons!

5.00I had such a great time learning how to surf here. The instructor was super patient, fun and really made me feel comfortable in the water. I took a few lessons and improved so much more than I expected. It ended up being one of the best parts of my trip. Can’t wait to come back. Pura vida!

5.00We have worked with Alvaro several times in the past. This year we had a longer stay in Costa Rica and rented a car to try different breaks. Not only did Alvaro help us with accommodations and the car rental, but we really improved our surfing! Some days we drove together from Santa Teresa to Cabuya, and along the way Alvaro shared so many facts and stories about Costa Rica from significant sights to traditional plant medicine. Alvaro is a true professional. He would check the conditions and choose the next day’s break based on our skill level. He worked with a videographer and reviewed the footage with us to make corrections. He is straightforward and clear in his instructions and always puts safety first. Over the many years we’ve been Alvaro’s clients, we truly feel cared for and comfortable. He and his team want you to be the best surfers you can be, and have a great time doing it! I highly recommend this experience.
