The Great House and Distillery tour captures an authentic insight into life on a 17th century plantation showcasing artifacts from Amerindian settlement through to colonial times. The movie c. 1935 is a rare and unique glimpse of this life and also of Barbados at the turn of the 20th century.
The attraction is intended to allow visitors to tour at their own pace or have a guided tour while also allowing opportunities to have quiet spaces for reflection and for relaxing within the gardens and landscaped grounds.
The cafe offers refreshments and light fare for the visitors taking the tour within the setting of a lush tropical gully.
Our artisan distillery showcases our manufacturing in a manner that allows the visitor to be immersed in the processes of making rum for "the sugar cane field to the bottle", viewing the crushing of cane within the antique steam mill allowing them to take away a more meaningful experience of their visit.

Went with my sister and grand children ages 9 and 7 the children really enjoyed the train ride including pushing the train on the turn table, they also enjoyed the vendors and view from Cherry Tree Hill. A walk around the gardens was also very enjoyable. My sister and myself found the talk about the distilling of the rum and heritage of the plantation extremely interesting.

My friend and I went to St Nicholas Abbey rum distillery and steam train ride last week. Our driver guide who dropped us off and picked us up was amazing. Very informative and funny so was very pleased with him. But the experience at St Nics was disappointing. The on site tour guide was lovely. But we could only go into two rooms in this rather small house. One room was roped off and no access to upstairs. We were then taken to the distillery which we stood outside the doors and looked into a room at all the rum making equipment. After that we were taking into another part of the house for the rum tasting. We were only given two samples, we had a better rum tasting experience at our hotel with 6 samples of a decent size. The steam train was pleasant but very short. They have a cafe there but was told if we wanted anything to get it after viewing the two rooms and before watching the video in a little side room as it might not be open after the film. We got a snack which meant we missed the start of the film. Afterwards it was open so got a coffee and biscuits. It’s quite expensive and we only had a short time to drink up as our driver was picking us up. The trip was £94 each so expensive for what you got out of it.

Very knowledgeable host, the tours is about 1 hour and 30 minute. We lived in Bridgetown, so takes around 40-50 minutes to go there. Make sure you negotiate the round trip transportation before you go. It will be hard to get taxi back if you don't have arrangement. At the end of the tour there is a rum tasting and a shop for you to buy rum. There are some birds there and one 🦜 does look a little distressed. Hope the owner can give some more care to it. Overall, it is a very nice place to visit for family. My daughter enjoyed the movie from old days too. Great education.

We did this trip as part of a tour through Sun Tours. This review is purely on St Nicholas Abbey NOT the tour operator (who were brilliant) St Nicholas Abbey is firstly not an Abbey but an old house. Visit here and be prepared to be herded through like sheep. We felt totally rushed and it was more of a production line than time to take photos or browse through the gift shop. I do not know why they bother having a restaurant either because there is no time to eat there! We were herded into an old stable to watch a film about the owners history (granted that part was interesting). However when we came out we were supposed to do rum tasting. We got to taste the 5 year rum, the white rum and was about to taste the dark rum when another guide literally pushed our poor guide out of the way to start the wine tasting with her group! Our rum tasting was literally 2 minutes if that. I found this very rude and felt sorry for our guide (he also seemed shocked by his colleague’s lack of manners!). Prior to this our guide was entertaining us with his awful jokes (I am not sure if he was a family member because he also took great delight in telling us about medals / coins given to the family. He also told us the history of a race horse and showed us a picture of him with the late Queen Elizabeth.) This place seemed more interested in getting as many people through the house as possible rather than giving them a good quality tour. It was a tour to remember, but for the wrong reasons.

Beautiful facility rich in history. Workers and family take pride in the facilities, their history and their products. Our scheduled time for a tour was miscommunicated to us. However, we ended up getting a private tour from Michelle. Her private tour was outstanding. Her knowledge and enthusiasm was on display during our time with her. If you have an opportunity for a tour with Michelle, you will truly enjoy every minute.

The visit to the 'great house' is a disappointment but the chance to walk around the distillery is so worthwhile. They still use a steam engine to crush the sugar cane which we watched and the tour was very interesting. The train journey was very pleasant and I was glad that we did it. The actual rum itself is very expensive but as you witness how it is created, you understand why.

While this visit could be great, it was ruined by the sight of mistreated birds in a cage. There is a metal cage hanging from a tree filled with at least 7 birds. The cage is filled with poop and they have basically one stick to all stand on together. The floor of the cage is so soiled that they can't even go there. This business is mistreating these creatures! They deserve better and I would not give money to a business that treats living creatures like this.

We enjoyed the tour of the plantation house and grounds. Our tour guide, Virginia, did an outstanding job! She was very personable and knowledgeable about the plantation house, distillery and grounds. She made the tour fun and was willing to take pictures for our group. The parlor had a chandelier made of shells, which was pretty awesome! She introduced many of the employees throughout the tour and made sure to explain what their responsibilities included. She also identified a very extraordinary Sandbox tree on the property and explained how the distillery was named. She also shared the unique way that they make their rum. At the end of the tour we saw a very informative short movie and then we were met by Simon to taste two of the rums. Following the tasting you could purchase the rum, shop in their gift store or get something to eat or drink. We felt fortunate to hear that the present owner saved the plantation and spectacular grounds from being turned into condos and preserved Barbadian history!

It was a great experience. Staff were all very welcoming, helpful and knowledgeable. The building and properties were perfectly restored and displayed. Incredible attention to detail. Grounds were immaculate. Simone was a wonderful spirits ambassador; souch so that we purchased an engraved cask strength rum from him.

What a delightful day and experience. Saint Nicholas Abbey is absolutely beautiful and the history is amazing. We enjoyed a full afternoon of a train ride, property tour, rum tour and tasting and a fantastic lunch on their restaurant patio amongst the trees and sounds of the Caribbean birds. A family owned business, we had the opportunity to share some time with Simon who gave us more information and a few laughs on the rums made here. The train experience was informative and entertaining. The tour guide really knew her stuff about the history. I was able to help with the turning of the old steam train’s engine which was fun. I would definitely recommend visiting this historical site of Barbados and all the beauty it offers.
