I recently took a tour of Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty, and while the experience itself was unforgettable, the tour guide left much to be desired. The landmarks themselves were awe-inspiring, but the tour guide’s lack of preparation and awareness of the weather really dampened the experience. It was a rainy day, and instead of adjusting the tour to accommodate the miserable weather, the guide made us wait at the boat dock for what felt like forever while he rambled on about the history. While it’s important to share knowledge, standing in the rain for long periods made it uncomfortable and frustrating. The tour could have been far more enjoyable if the guide had kept things moving. The overall content of the tour was interesting, and Ellis Island was a powerful experience—learning about the millions of immigrants who passed through there really made history come to life. The Statue of Liberty is, of course, iconic, and getting up close to it was a great photo opportunity. But, given the weather, I felt that the tour guide should have adapted better to the situation. The lack of flexibility from the guide made a good tour less enjoyable than it could have been. In short, while the landmarks themselves are well worth seeing, the lack of consideration for the weather and a guide who seemed unprepared for the conditions made for a less-than-ideal experience. It would be great if the tour company adjusted their approach during bad weather to make sure guests have a more comfortable and engaging time.
