Experience Stockholm! Built on 14 islands at the entrance to lake Malaren from the Baltic sea, this city is world famous for its beauty. Seeing it from the water is an unforgettable event. But when visiting Stockholm, you should also see Old Town, the best-preserved medieval city centre in the world. This tour combines both; first, we will go on a walking tour of the cobblestone alleyways in Old Town, and then you continue with the legendary Royal Canal Tour, operated by Stromma Group. This boat tour is included in the fee.

During the walking tour, you will learn about and connect with the history of Stockholm and Sweden. You will take in several historic and beautiful buildings. You start at the Opera house. You will see the Parliament building, the Royal Palace and Stortorget in Old Town, and walk through the medieval streets of Old Town.

The boat then takes you on a fascinating tour through the "Djurgårdsbrunn" Canal and gives you fabulous views of the Stockholm skyline.

The Royal Swedish Opera

You will begin this picturesque journey with a short introduction to Sweden and Stockholm. The formal name of Sweden is “Kingdom of Sweden”. Many of the buildings you will see at this point have a Royal connection. The majestic Royal Palace in front of you was built at the beginning of the 18th century in the magnificent Baroque style. The Opera house figured in the opera "The Masked Ball" composed by Guiseppe Verdi about the Swedish king Gustav III. The beautiful house in the classic style on the other side of the square, which now houses the Ministry of Foreign affairs, was once the Heir Presumptive palace.

Parliament Building (Riksdagshuset)

Next, explore the history of the Swedish government. The Parliament Building was designed in the Neo-Renaissance style, with a Neo-Baroque style facade section. The parliament building was constructed between 1897 and 1905. The predecessor of the parliament (riksdagen) was the “Riksdag of the Estates” (Ståndsriksdagen) where Nobility, Clergy, Burghers, and Peasants met separately for discussions before meeting the King in the palace. Until its dissolution in 1866, this institution was the highest authority in Sweden next to the King. In 1866 a parliament with two chambers was introduced, but without equal voting rights for all citizens. The first elections with general suffrage were held in 1921. This was after a long political struggle led by liberals and socialists. In 1975 the constitution was changed, and the two chambers of the parliament were merged into one. It was also confirmed that the king has only a representative role and no real power.

We had fun time walking around and hearing historical stories from Bengt. There is so much to see you will want to come back. The boat cruise is the perfect way to rest your legs and see Stockholm from another perspective.

The walking portion was engaging and insightful, and we felt like we really got to know the city. Afterward, we boarded the boat for a scenic and equally educational tour on the water. I thoroughly enjoyed this informative and well-paced tour of beautiful Old Town Stockholm with Bengt. He skillfully wove an obvious and deep knowledge of historical facts with contemporary issues, presented curated images to amplify what we saw on the ground, and provided ample time for pondering and questions and absorbing the depth of history. The walking tour was nicely complemented by the boat tour, which provided stunning water views of the city and shores . I highly recommend this tour.

Our guide Bengt was wonderful! Super knowledgeable and happy to answer questions. The tour is well planned out - a nice walk past the main attractions of Gamla Stan - gave us a good idea of where we might want to buy tickets to do full tours inside some of the buildings like the royal palace and city hall. We went on a Sunday morning, before the city was really awake and bustling. Was a wonderful way to see the old town!

Recommend a fantastic city tour of Stockholm, given by August (his name) at Amitylux Guided Tours, amitylux.com. He proved to be the best guide we’ve ever had the pleasure of experiencing-his breath and depth of knowledge was laudatory and perhaps, most important, gave the group a balanced and compassionate understanding of Sweden’s history and culture. He garnered a diverse group of inquiries and honestly answered all the questions. He was personable and had a fun sense of humor. I only wish he could be cloned for other countries we’ve visited. Stockholm is a wonderful city- on all accounts!
