We weren't aware that a dress code was required for the Arab/Indian quarter, so have to have shoulders covered and reasonable length in your outfit.

Even though our cruise ship offered free excursions in Surabaya we opted to take a smaller more personalized tour offered on Viator. And we had the most amazing excursion ever. Our guide Layla was fabulous. She took us to see places not usually on the tour agenda. We got to explore the spice markets and the wet market with its barrels of fresh fish. It really gave us an insight into how these people lived and thrived. I am disabled and Layla held my arm tightly through all of the spots that were difficult for me to transit. We saw markets, temples and monuments and got an experience we will never forget. Layla has an amazing depth of local knowledge snd insight.

We had an absolutely brilliant day. There were only 4 of us on the tour and so we felt like we had a really intimate and more tailored experience. Our guide Chita (apologies if misspelt!) was amazing and she and the driver Gun went above and beyond to ensure we had a great experience. We were taken to some interesting and authentic places and felt that these were places we never would have seen with a large tour group on a coach. We were back to the port in plenty of time and never felt rushed or nervous about a late return throughout the day. Would highly recommend this tour and at half the price being charged on the ship, you can't go wrong!

Our guide Salsa was excellent! Her English was perfect, and her knowledge of the city was wonderful. She was very personable and allowed us to customize our tour, but also letting us know what we shouldn’t miss. We felt we received a great overview of the city. Our driver, Boy safely and efficiently got us through the city traffic. Our restaurant lunch was delicious. We’ve had many guides around the world, and this team was top-notch.

Unfortunately, our tour guide was a very quiet gentleman who said very little on the bus as he drove us around and around the city. We went to places that were not on the tour and skipped places that were on the tour. For example, we were supposed to visit the Arab quarter. The only thing we saw of the Arab quarter was door in the market exiting to the airport. We did not get to experience walking through the air report or seeing any of it. Same goes for Chinatown after we turned the corner. The guide mentioned that that was Chinatown we just passed, but all we saw it was part of the gate to Chinatown, but never went to see it. it was quite a boring excursion, and the whole group decided to just be dropped at the mall and end the tour there.
