  Great trip, staff were excellent. I would highly recomend it for anyone who likes trains, nature and scenery. We were off a cruise ship so was a bit worried about getting back on time, but we arrived back 5 minutes early, so all good.

  We were on a cruise ship and planned this excursion on our own. The railway station is a short (3 block) walk from the Octagon. The building itself is amazing for a photograph. Tickets sell out fast so be sure to book in advance. Our tour started at 0930h and there was a separate train for those who booked through the cruise ship at a premium price. Seats were pre-assigned and ours changed from the day we printed the train tickets versus what was on the email link, so be sure to check your seat number before boarding. The train is small so you will get to know your seatmates. There were toilets on board. There is a cafe on board to order food and drinks. Cell service was lost soon after leaving, so they allow you to set up a tab to pay at the end of the tour. There is a small viewing platform at the back of the train that can hold 4-5 adults. We were allowed on the viewing platform after the train passed through the first few tunnels. The train can barely fit through the tunnels, which is why passengers are not allowed on the viewing platform earlier. The tour is narrated by a guide reading from a script so we learned a lot about the history of the area. It was approximately 2 hours to Pukerangi, where we stopped for 30 mins, and 2 hours back. The locals had a little market set up for train visitors in Pukerangi. On the way back, the guide asked passengers to switch sides of the train (seats A/B moved to C/D) so that everyone could have views from both sides. We were delayed for 30-45 mins as there were reports of a person in one of the tunnels. The train could not be cleared to enter the tunnel until the local authorities confirmed no one was in there. We still had plenty of time to get back to our ship.

  The narration was most enlightening, particularly the parts that included stories of great sacrifices and individual determination. The history of each location was intriguing and very interesting, capturing our attention. A delightful train journey that we would probably do again.

  We went to the beautiful historic rail station to board the train which was a wonderful ride through gorges and along a beautiful river, the scenery was fantastic and the food on the train was ok. Once we reached the end the engine dismantled and was put on the other end for our Journey back, everyone swapped sides of the train so you see the scenery on the other side which was a great idea.

  The Taieri Gorge scenic tour was absolutely beautiful. The landscapes were stunning the whole way, and the experience felt so peaceful and memorable. The commentary was informative, and the narrator was genuinely enjoyable to listen to, easy to follow and added so much to the journey. A wonderful experience and definitely worth doing while in Dunedin!

  Great way to see the country around Dunedin. Very good narrative about the area and its history. Love the local crafts and products at the turn around. Gorgeous scenery and love the Border Collie on board! Cafe had great selection of food.

  It is a relaxing time, in comfortable seats seeing beautiful scenery. You are able to move around and stand on the platform outside to get great pictures.

  Loved the train ride on this rickety old train. Denis the train guy was really friendly. Doesn’t matter which side you sit, you get great views on both sides and you can walk around. The viewing platform is far too small for the number of people who want to go outside though. Only hassle for some people was when we stopped half way for more people to get on and they were told by their tour guide to sit anywhere resulting in a few stand offs because we all had numbered seats but Denis sorted it. Old people can get miffed if their comforts are disrupted.
