This half day tour to the middle of Terceira Island will let you visit both sides of the island. The tour starts at Monte Brasil, where you will have privileged view to Angra do Heroísmo city and both its bays. Next stop will be Algar do Carvão, where you will visit a vulcanic cave. You will be amazed! The sulphur fumaroles of Furnas do Enxofre Furnas do Enxofre are our the next stop. After 30min we get to Biscoitos where you find natural pools outlined among the curious configurations of black rocks resulting from volcanic eruptions. the Biscoitos area is also a well-known wine-growing region where the famous verdelho wine of the Azores is produced.

Algar do Carvao
Algar do Carvão Natural Reserve The great eruption, known as the Pico Alto, which occurred north of the existing Guilherme Moniz volcanic apparatus, poured its lavas from a great distance. Later, a new eruption, this time basaltic, tore the ground and initiated a process that would lead to the formation of a stromboliano volcano – the Peak of the Coal. In a first phase, by forcing and trying to break the existing trachytic effusion, which constituted a natural barrier of little consistency, it formed the zone of the lagoon and the two vaults on it. Later, in a new attempt of evasion, the basaltic lavas, they broke more to the side the current chimney, leaving to the outside. In its final phase the magma descended into the deepest conduits and the magma chamber, giving rise, this almost instantaneous absence of magma, to the formation of the Algar proper. Very effusive lava spills produced very flowing acidic lava rivers that charred existing vegetation. The dating of one of the fossils then formed gives the Algar do Carvão an age of 2148 (+ or-115 years).
Furnas do Enxofre
Furnas do Enxofre The visitation circuit of Furnas do Enxofre was designed to secure the visitation of this natural monument, allowing on one hand, safe access to all visitors, and on the other, protection of the habitats through the use of rustic material, integrated into the landscape. The circuit through the fumaroles and northern slope zone was adapted to existing paths and complemented with facilitated access. A set of informational panels support the interpretation of natural elements present.

5.00I really enjoy the tour with Pico de aventura. The guide was very nice and helpful. He picked me up in front of my hostel in Praia and brought me back there at the end of the tour. Very practical ! The caves were very beautiful and worth to visit.

5.00The whole experience is memorable couldn't skip not even one moment. We enjoyed it a lot. The guide Juaquim is very knowledgable and good at explaning which made the tour more interesting than we expected. Highly reccomended!
Small Group Tour of the Volcanic Sites of the Island

5.00This tour takes you to some of the coolest places on Terceira Island. We started at the top of Mont Brasil to take in the views of the city of Angra as well as the volcanic caldeira. Then off to explore Algar do Carvao, Furnas do Enxofre and Gruta Natal. There were 4 people on the tour, 3 of which spoke Portuguese and I speak English. Our guide was great at translating between us and make sure we all got all the amazing facts about these sites. It was also nice to explore in a small group compared to the larger bus tours.
A must see!!

5.00Absolutely magnificent! Unbelievable views, truly! We are so glad we did this tour, was awesome, definitely recommend while visiting here!! There is very steep stairs and some small holes to fit through, but if you decide not to do it that’s fine too. You can just look around without completely doing whole cave! Definitely would recommend this to all! Nit sure if ok fir very small children though. Great day!

5.00We had a wonderful time with Ivo, it was a personalized tour with only our family of , we were picked up at our hotel. Ivo remembered something I had mentioned earlier on and took a slight detour to show my son a stone feature that was used to protect people from the running bulls, even though it was getting dark. Thank you Ivo for giving us a memorable and wonderful time
