Parish Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel
The Parish Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, also known as the Carmelite Church, is a Doric Roman Catholic parish church that dates back to the early twentieth century. It was established as a result of an incident that occurred on July 10, 1902, when two drunken sailors began throwing stones at a house near the bridge leading to Manoel island. However, due to the modest capacity of just 200 people, a new church was erected between 1921 and 1935 and inaugurated on May 23, 1959, but the image and stone are still kept in the church in a side chapel.
Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Sanctuary was founded in 1877 and has been a parish church since 1918. To accommodate the growing population, the church was expanded in 1930. It was designed in the Roman-Ionic style and features gilded statues and ornate paintings. The dome is adorned with paintings of several Franciscan saints, while the ceiling displays joyous moments from Mary's life. The altar features five paintings by Maltese artist Giuseppe Cal, one of which is his masterwork depicting St Gerome partially nude in the Bethlehem grotto. The statue of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart was created by Maltese artist Girolamo Darmanin in 1879 and was installed in the church on June 26, 1881, the day the church was dedicated and opened for service.
