Fram Museum
The main exhibition in the Fram building has explanatory texts in ten languages and describes the three great Fram expeditions. In June 2013 we inaugurated our new Gjøa building, which is connected to the Fram with an underground tunnel. The centerpiece here is Gjøa, the first ship to navigate the whole of the Northwest Passage. There are brand new historical exhibitions on the expeditions of Gjøa and Maud, of the airplanes N24 and N25 as well as of the airship Norge, John Franklin's legendary expedition and those of Henry Larsen and Eivind Astrup. We also present current issues facing the High North such as polar bears, ice melting, gas and oil etc. There is a 116 seats cinema showing a polar introduction movie every fifteen minutes.

It felt like stepping directly into the golden age of polar exploration. What makes it so memorable is that the actual ship, the Fram, is the experience. You’re not looking at it from behind ropes or glass; you can walk aboard it, explore the cabins, engine room and decks, and genuinely imagine what life must have been like for explorers heading into the Arctic darkness. It gives the museum a sense of atmosphere and authenticity that’s hard to replicate anywhere else. The stories of Fridtjof Nansen, Roald Amundsen and the polar expeditions are told brilliantly, adventurous, human and surprisingly emotional in places. The interactive exhibits and the sheer ambition of those journeys make it engaging whether you’re deeply into history or not. It’s also one of those museums that manages to feel immersive without becoming overly polished or commercialised. You leave with a genuine appreciation for just how extreme and courageous those expeditions were. *Visited with the Oslo Pass.

Fbeing in the mere presence of this multi-record-breaking engineering marvel should, by all means, be more than enough to impress the ordinary onlooker, but just in case it isn’t, immersive exhibits on polar expeditions, equipment, and the explorers themselves leave little doubt as to the sheer audacity and ingenuity behind Fram’s voyages. visitors (even the discerning ones) are allowed on board (yes, the original ship!) to poke, prod, and leave our grubby little fingerprints all over this extraordinary relic of history, experiencing up close the very environment that tested some of Norway’s most daring explorers. ngl, i had zero expectation of what to expect when I stepped in here. in retrospect, i even wonder how it made my list. but i am beyond delighted that i did, mostly because it was extremely effective in conveying not just the “wow” of polar explorations, but the immense courage, endurance, turmoil, and difficult life decisions that had to be made, just to make these feats possible. and of course, the awe of simply being in the presence of something so monumental cannot be dismissed. this was a ship that was built in 1892, which makes it more than 130 years old as we speak. on a side note, you may have come across a similar museum named the Norwegian Maritime Museum; and you may be wondering which to pick, or if you should even be picking at all. even though both are essentially marine-themed, it is worth knowing that the similarities just about end there. shere Fram is immersive, intimate, and very specific in its polar expedition history, the Norwegian Maritime Museum is broader in scope. in the latter, information spans centuries of Norway’s seafaring history, from fishing and coastal life to shipping and marine technology, and the visitor’s journey is more exhibition-led than experiential. if you can only do one, i would highly recommend Fram over Norwegian Maritime, simply because there is a strong visceral thrill you will get out of Fram that you will most likely not find in its counterpart. there is something about standing inside a vessel that once pushed into the most hostile corners of the planet that makes the experience land in a way most static exhibitions alone rarely can. that said, if there is a niche to your interest, then definitely stamp both firmly onto your itinerary (and just drop something else altogether if time gets a little too tight). neither of these museums should be rushed, especially if you are particularly keen on the field of marine.

The museum is located on the Bydgøy peninsula and you can be on site by ferry boat from the port in 10 minutes. If you have the Oslo Pass, admission is included, otherwise you pay 180,- NOK (approximately 16,50 euros) in April 2026. The Fram was used in the three famous polar expeditions of Fridtjof Nansen (1893-1896), Otto Sverdrup (1898-1902) and Roald Amundsen (1910-1912). It was built in 1892 and is on display in the original with well-preserved furnishings and objects on site. The museum was opened in May 1936. The exhibition is very extensive and has finally ‘slain’ us. Although very informative, at some point you no longer have an overview. Nevertheless a recommendation when visiting Oslo.

I was not expecting this to be one of the highlights of my trip to Oslo, I went in with little interest in board and not much knowledge of polar exploration, but I found it so interesting and learnt so much. I particularly enjoyed the comparison of Amusden and Scott's attempts. There was a lot of information, arguably too much, but a really worthwhile visit. Tip- take the museum ferry (instead of tram) for a nice trip on the fjords as well!

Second visit and still beautiful. What an incredible story that these polar explorations! The highlighting of these stories demonstrates the whole logistical and human endeavour of such a project. Put in perspective of the time, it's completely crazy The boat is beautiful and visiting it allows to imagine living conditions

So cool that you can actually walk on two ships that have been to the poles. Interesting history displayed in a variety of ways. Well worth a visit.

Located on museum island and there is a regular ferry going back and to, so accessible. So much information and so much to see, I don't know where to start. Information and facts with photos and exhibits everywhere. The boat is amazing and you can go down below deck but the steps are steep. There is a lift to all floors so accessible to a certain degree, you can only go on the deck of the boat. There is cafe and a shop when you exit. We had the Oslo Pass and it gives free admission to this museum.

Visited this museum on a wet day as part of the Hop on hop off bus. Very well put together with lots of information well presented. Spent over two hours looking at the various exhibits. Well done.

Fascinating museum. The ship, Fram, which carried explorer Roald Amundsen and crew to the South Pole, is there in all its glory. The museum is build in a triangle form so that the top of the mast can be included in the museum. Visitors can walk all over the ship, talking a tour of the deck, crews' quarters, kitchen, boiler room and dining table, all laid out. Photographs and placards describing the expedition, as well as videos, are there too. Free lockers provide a place for coats.
