Mountebank is a hysterical and completely unique walking tour of Edinburgh and the only tour of the city led by a professional, award winning stand-up comedian. Since starting in 2019 Mountebank's success has attracted copy cat 'comedy' tours but Mountebank is the original, best and only tour led by an actual stand-up comic and historian!

Your guide is Edinburgh based stand-up comic Daniel Downie - and his trusty sidekick Brahan the dog! Daniel has brought several sell-out shows all about Scotland to the Edinburgh Fringe and is currently studying for a Masters degree in Scottish history. Daniel has been described as 'outstanding' and 'must see' by the Scotsman newspaper and his show about Mary Queen of Scots was named 'Best History Show' at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Mountebank is all about the hysterical and ridiculous nature of Scotland's history, people, language, weather - all things Scottish basically! So come along and laugh a lot while you learn a little :)

Monkey Barrel Comedy

The tour starts at the world famous Monkey Barrel Comedy club where I find out a little about you, you learn a little more about me (more than you probably care to know!) I teach you some of my favourite Scottish vocabulary and then we set off on our Old Town adventure..!!

Daniel (and affection seeking Brahan) provided a great and entertaining history of Edinburgh, always with a quip to finish the stories. Daniel's passion for history really came through and I would highly recommend the tour.

Absolutely loved this tour. A lot of incredibly interesting info, and many, many laughs. More literary and cultural anecdotes than I expected, which were all brilliantly delivered and very welcome among the group. Expect some colourful language and some sharp and well-observed barbs, poking fun at the group. Daniel is clearly very knowledgeable and passionate about his subject; a keen intellect that makes him a very good comic, and I am definitely encouraged to follow more of his comedy having been on this tour. We enjoyed every moment.

Daniel’s comedy tour is a great way to learn more about the history of Edinburgh while having plenty of laughs along the way. He keeps the group engaged with lots of audience interaction, and his sidekick dog, Brahan, adds even more fun to the show. The humor is clever and inclusive — suitable for everyone, even Belgians without humor (Daniel’s words, not mine!) and 15.5-year-olds alike 😁. Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys a mix of history and comedy!

Daniel’s humor, knowledge of Scottish history was the highlight of our time in Edinburgh. He connected with each of us and then built that info into his quips. Many belly laughs were had!

What a treat this tour was! Daniel was absolutely hilarious and incredibly knowledgeable. We learned so much about the history of Edinburgh and Scotland. His description of what the tour involved was accurate as well. I recommend.
