Discover Belfast’s past while exploring life during The Troubles, when conflict, fear, and resilience shaped everyday reality. Guided by two local women — one from a Republican background and one from a Loyalist community — you’ll walk the Falls and Shankill Roads, where murals, streets, and memories reveal how identity, division, and community shaped their childhoods. They share personal stories of loss, strength, everyday routines under threat, and the courage required to hold families and neighborhoods together. Though separated by politics and walls, their experiences reflect a shared determination to protect loved ones and hope for a better future. You’ll also learn how women on both sides supported dialogue, helped sustain the peace process, and continue to work toward reconciliation today. More than a sightseeing tour, this is a reflective, human encounter with lived history — an invitation to hear real voices and understand Belfast through the perspectives of its women.

I cannot enthuse enough about this tour. Absolutely stunning and it gives a real insite in to the troubles and the impact that it had on ordinary people. Barbara and Julie were amazing guides. Don't even think about this, book it.

I feel truly humbled and privileged to have spent three hours with Barbara and Julie. It’s hard to put into words just how powerful and unforgettable this tour is—if you ever get the chance, don’t hesitate to go. The first half, led by Barbara on the Catholic side of the wall, is followed by the second half with Julie, who guides you through the peace gates into the Protestant side. Hearing two deeply personal and contrasting perspectives on the same conflict is incredibly moving. Both women are remarkably strong, having lived through the Troubles themselves, and their stories bring a level of authenticity and humanity that no other tour could replicate. This experience goes far beyond history—it’s personal, emotional, and profoundly impactful. Thank you both, from the bottom of my heart, for sharing your stories with us. Wishing you peace always.

Truly the most moving and informative walking tour we’ve ever taken, and that’s saying something. The extraordinary generosity of Barbara and Julie to share their experiences growing up and raising families during the Troubles gave us insights and an understanding we would otherwise never have.

Both Barbara and Julie gave poignant tours on their side of the gates. Very moving, personal recollections of the past, as well as testimonies regarding currant results and life experiences. I walked away with a deeper and much more collective understanding of the Troubles.

The tour was amazing. It’s eye-opening to see how raw the history of the Troubles is, and how its effects are very much still impacting the present day. The best part about the tour in my opinion is that its heart is the lived experiences of the two tour guides, each one from a different side of the wall. Forgive me but I forgot the name of my tour guide. But she was a lovely woman who used earpieces to assist with hearing through the bustle of Belfast traffic. She also provided physical elements to help visualize how troublesome the times were, such as rubber bullets and old photos.

For anyone who has ever heard mention of “The Troubles,”especially those of us from far away, please take this tour. The first half, on the Falls Rd (Nationalist) side of the fence was led by Barbara. A wee lass when it all began, she very much lived it, right through the Good Friday agreement. She was extremely well prepared with photos, facts, dates, props. She starts with a history of what led to the conflict, and (quite literally) walks you through to present day. When she reaches the end her half, she hands it off to Judith. Judith picks things up on the Unionist, or Protestant side, the Shankhill area. She also has strong feelings about the troubles, but of course with a markedly different slant. Both women have strong partisan feelings. Neither wants their children, nor their children’s children to have to relive any of it. This two perspective format works very well.

Very impressive tour. Both women talk about history and their own life as part of that history. After the tour we had to take a break to process the complicated relationship between both sides. Best tour i did in years.

I had an exceptional experience on the Troubles tour in Belfast. Barbara and Julie, the guides who shared their personal histories growing up on either side of the political divide, were fantastic! The earpiece provided for the segment on the Irish Republican perspective was particularly helpful. I gained profound insights into the political conflict and the violence from paramilitaries on both sides from the 60s to the late 90s. I was especially struck by the crucial roles women played in both communities, not just in providing for their families but also in facilitating the peace process, especially during the 1998 Good Friday Agreement. This tour is one of the best walking experiences I’ve had, and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in history. It's a must-do!

What a privilege to learn so much from two contrasting women's perspective of life in the 60s to the present day! To actually walk along The Falls and Shanklin Roads (something I never imagined I would ever do) ; and hear reflections of their journeys throughout this time was truly humbling. As a child growing up during this period much of my own knowledge of these two communities came mainly from the media! This 3 hour walk personally gave me the opportunity to reflect on, and understand some of the effects it has had (and continues to have) on these ladies and their families lives. Sadly, across the world we continue to live with inequality, injustice, hatred and war. Many, many children, like these ladies, will experience a plethora of terrifying experiences including fear, loss, anger and death. Continue to share your stories ladies and there is hope. Walls are a man made construct its women's strength that will ensure bridges to the future. Ps Belfast is locally known as having 4 seasons in a day dress appropriately for all eventualities! The head phones are an absolute must to ensure both stories can be fully heard.

Absolutely incredible. Insightful and harrowing, with personal stories intertwined into key historical milestones. Barbara was sensational. One of the best walking tours myself and my friend have ever been on. Would recommend to absolutely everyone. No visit in Belfast is complete without knowing how we got here.
