Overall a great escape to Tajikistan with a beautiful mountains environment. The guide did not speak English, but it was not an issue. The tour will drop you at a local market to buy fruits / pastries. Please be aware that they might not take UZS at the market. You can ask the driver to pay for you then reimburse him in UZS. There is not much walking during the tour. The last 200m to walk are not hard to complete. It's bumpy at times and the duration of the tour will depends on the weather conditions. One clean toilets half-way through.

Fantastic experience to see the people and culture of Tajikistan, which is really different then Uzbekistan. It was raining, but the lakes were still very bright and blue.

If you still not 100% sure about this trip, here is the missing piece to book it: It is absolutely worth it. We, my girlfriend and I, were lucky and nobody else booked in this time slot and therefore got a private tour. We were picked up around 6 at our hotel and brought to the border. The border police guys are friendly and it doesn’t take long (UK peeps need an online visa which takes several days, EU does not and passport is enough) . On the other side you get picked up by a very good and experienced driver, who speaks very little English, but Russian and Tadschik. You spent the day with him. We went to a bazaar and changed money from Uzbek Som to the Tadschik currency. I changed 300k to 210 Tadschik Somoni. We had breakfast in Pandschakent (20 Somoni) and after the lakes we had lunch for 70 Somoni. 200 Somoni should be enough in our view for 2 people. Maybe check the exchange rates the day before, to get an idea. The lakes are beautiful especially number 7. Overall, you get an insight into one of the most traditional and isolated places in Central Asia. We’d highly recommend it.

Superb tower with 7 lakes. We left early, practically no waiting at the border and hardly anyone on the spots. The driver was careful, and regaled us with many breaks! Thank you.

Overall it was a great experience, from hotel pickup to the return it was extremely well organized. The company coordinator Fayoziddin was really thorough. Highly recommend. We left our hotel at 6 on the instructions of our previous day’s guide to avoid border crossing delays on the Tajik side. We had none and the tour was still 12 hours, door to door. Judging by returning vehicles we saw driving up, we were one of the first to get to the lakes so it was uncrowded and the sun was in a good position to make the colour of the lakes really stand out. Arriving later and the sun may be too low and blocked by the mountains which is what I saw on the return at 2 or 3 of the lakes. Observations - lakes are not as big as I expected, rather small actually. Even though I was told the water levels are higher as summer approaches due to melting from glaciers they are not big. Someone could easily walk around the biggest in 60 min if there was a path to do so. Scenery is quite stunning as you drive up the mountain. Absolutely nothing to buy in Panjakent market. No souvenirs!!! We had the most amazing samosas at a hole in wall shop on the left, a few meters before you get to the market when coming from the border. 4 for about US$1.50. Pastry as flakey as anything I have ever had. Best not to do the museums or statues until after the lakes in case your time is short as they aren’t much to see. In truth, we did not stop to see them after we ate. Bring some chocolates or treats for some little kids because the 5th? lake is very close to a village. They are cute because they aren’t pushy. Be prepared for a heck of a ride on bumpy and very narrow one lane road, at least 45 minutes and a bit scary when trying to get by oncoming vehicles. If you get carsick, bring Gravol!!! Only negatives - lakes are small; our guide, Sole on the Tajik side was knowledgeable and friendly but maybe could have been more assertive as far as organization eg. how long each stop was to be.

This is a great trip overall. We're surprised by the differences between Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. The border crossing was very smooth because we arrived there very early, well done by our guide. The lakes are beautiful and the bumpy road also has its highlights but the most interesting thing of the tour is to get to see the local culture, stop for lunch at a village and see get to see the city of Panjakent with the mountains in the back. Very recommended.

I really liked the guide! Only with such a guide it's not scary to ride the mountains - total trust! I wish everyone for once in their life to visit this tour, it's the best I've seen. Thank you!
