Transfagarasan Highway
We start driving the scenic Transfagarasan road in the morning and head to its iconic high-altitude landscapes. The winding road takes us to the highest point (2,042 meters), to the beautiful glacial Balea Lake (2,034 meters) and to Capra Waterfall, our final point. Built during the communist regime, Transfagarasan was considered a strategic road between Transylvania and Southern Romania. Its overwhelming landscapes have transformed it, however, into one of the most important tourist attractions of Romania. Crossing the highest part of the Carpathians, the construction of the Transfagarasan required an enormous amount of work and planning. Its story is fascinating and you'll discover it during this day trip.
Carta Monastery
On the way back to Sibiu, we stop in Carta to visit the ruins of the only Cistercian monument in Romania. Dating from the troubled medieval centuries, the Abbey from Carta was once the main center of the powerful Cistercian order in the Transylvanian space.

Great experience to see some of the beautiful nature landscape in the Fagaras Mountains. The Transfagarasan Road snaking up to Balea Lake at 2000m altitude is super scenic to drive and allows for some magnificent, awe-inspiring views. And - after returning from the mountains - with the visit to medieval Carta Monastery the tour also adds some captivating history. All in all, a great package. My guide Adela did a fantastic job showing me around, getting me to points of particularly great views, answering questions, and making history come to life. Thanks Adela!

We went on the Transfagarasan tour and it was amazing! The guide, Diana, was so knowledgeable and interesting to listen to that you could clearly feel how much she loves and cares about her homeland. She is really devoted to her business and a nice person too! She and Radu, who was our driver, answered all our questions about Romania with patience and enthusiasm (even political ones). The drive itself was very comfortable and smooth, so we had enough time to see every beautiful spot we passed. I definitely recommend Uncover Romania to anybody who likes a personal touch or keen on learning new stuff!
