Expanding on the incredible opportunities of the Wildlife & Penguin
Tour, this tour provides the unique opportunity to experience the reserve at sunset.
The magnificent light casting over the landscape as the sun sets on the reserve is breathtaking. At points throughout the year, this time of day provides the greatest opportunity to view hoiho | Yellow-eyed Penguins in the wild as they return from a day foraging at sea, as well as opportunities to view other unique wildlife from fur seals, sea lions, shore and land birds, native fauna, and more await you within our private reserve.
Best of all, by taking a tour you are joining our work, as tour operations directly fund the conservation, rehabilitation, restoration, and education initiatives at The OPERA.

Our Twilight at The OPERA tour provides a unique opportunity to experience our nature reserve at sunset. Like our penguin tours during the day, this tour offers the most exclusive opportunity in New Zealand to view the endangered, hoiho (yellow-eyed penguins), in their natural habitat. This 90-minute guided tour consists of three parts. Our guests begin their experience in a theatre setting, where they learn about the hoiho (yellow-eyed penguin) and our conservation efforts to protect them. Guests then move into our rehabilitation centre where hoiho (yellow-eyed penguins) and other penguin species can be seen up close (when birds are in our care). Finally, guests take a short bus trip into our reserve where they are guided on an approximately 2km (1.25 mile) nature walk with the potential to see numerous plants and animals, including yellow-eyed penguins and little penguins, fur seals, sea lions, and several species of shore and land birds, all of which reside in the reserve.

Cool views and amazing to see the work going into preservation of such wonderful species. It's great to see that the human impact is kept minimal and our contribution is helping keep the work going. We saw nesting little blues and sea lions, no hoiho today but there was one in rehabilitation so still got to see them up close.

Such an amazing experience. The tour guides were so knowledgable and friendly. They looked after us so well. This tour takes in mind that this is the animals' homes and were are just visiting. Totally recommend going.

Great experience and seeing the penguins was wonderful. Careful walking during rain event. Great to borrow rain coats and binoculars.

We both really enjoyed this activity. The information given on the yellow-eyed penguins at the beginning was very educational and presented clearly. We then were driven to the reserve and walked very quietly along trenches to see 2 penguins moulting. The penguins seemed unaware of our presence. Then off to the coastline where we saw 6 other penguins and a similar number of sea lions. This inlcuded 2 penguins and a sea line coming into the beach and waddling up into the dunes. Lastly we saw many penguins who were being cared for at the facility to help them to recover from various stresses. It was also good knowing that the fees we paid help support these fascinating birds.
