We created the camp to provide a quality experience with excellent service, as we want our guests to experience the adventure of Acatenango without having a bad time. Our food portions are generously sized and made with sustaining ingredients, as we know firsthand how demanding this adventure is. The camp is new and very well-designed. It's also very well-located, with a surprising view of the the protagonist of this adventure, the Fuego Volcano.
Our camp is called IXCANUL, which in the Mayan language refers to the internal force of the mountain, which can erupt at any moment. Our goal is for you to fall in love with our country and make you want to come back again to create unforgettable experiences.

Ascent to the Acatenango volcano

We will begin the adventure at the Experience GT agency, where instructions and recommendations for the climb will be given. Then, lunch and the equipment required for the hike will be delivered.
Aldea La Soledad
We will take a vehicle from Antigua to the village of La Soledad, at the foot of the Acatenango volcano, where we will begin our hike adventure in a private land ¨Miratenango¨
We begin our ascent in Miratenango, our first stop, where you will find the last bathroom with water, a market to run any last-minute errands you may need.The route we use is private, saving you 1 hour and 20 minutes compared to the usual route.
Acatenango
The Acatenango volcano, which has a Height of 3,976 meters it has a medium - high level, as it takes approximately 4.5 to 5 hours to climb, Well, it depends on your physical condition and the stops you make to rest. We make a second stop when we reach the Acatenango payment booth, where the first entrance fee is paid by the guide, and they will put a bracelet on you to keep track. Halfway through the journey, another brake is taken for lunch, then we continue the hike until we reached "El tonel" at this point you have completed 80% of the climb to the volcano. then we walk along a path of approximately 30 minutes duration to reach the second payment booth also paid by the guide, and then we continue for 15 minutes to the camp where you will be able to rest for a while, drink or eat something.
Volcan de Fuego
You arrive at camp around 3:30 or 4 in the afternoon. You'll have a half-hour break, and at 4:30, you'll start the hike to the fire for those who want to do it. It's important to note that there's an additional cost of $30 per person, and you must notify the guide before you can do it. The hike takes approximately 4 hours to go and return.
Acatenango
Ixcanul camp At 6:30, the bonfire is lit, hot chocolate is made, and marshmellows are handed out for everyone to eat. If you don't want hot chocolate, you can order coffee or tea. At 7:30, dinner is served, and finally at the end you can enjoy a glass of wine, while you see the view of the Fuego volcano.

Acatenango
At 4 a.m., the ascent to the top of Acatenango begins, to see the majestic sunrise and admire the beauty of our country, a unique experience. We returned at 7am to have breakfast and pack to begin the descent.
Aldea La Soledad
We finished the descent at approximately 11am and arrive back at Miratenango to take the vehicle that would take you back to Antigua between 12:30 and 1:15pm
We arrived at the agency to deliver the equipment.

IXCANUL Camp: Wooden cabins with views of the Fuego volcano, 3-tier bunk beds
Private tour: Private transfer and cabin for 6 occupants are provided.
Duration: 45 minutes: The only difference is the method of ascent; the camp is exactly the same as the hiking route and includes the same amenitie.
pickup truck: We'll take up 80% of the volcano in a 4x4 vehicle (capacity for 6 all included).

5.00This was the best tour I could have asked for. The guides were very organized and laid back at the same time, making this a seamless experience with the needed trust provided. The guides were attentive and the logistics were well prepared. Facilities are understandibly rough but it seems the location is prime to have the best views compared to other camps. They also helped me coordinating transportation to Flores, and were very hospitable all the time. The lady that offers breakfast at the office is the best! Thank you!

5.00Amazing experience! It’s a hard walk but our tour guide Roberto was the best and really made it all just fun and exciting! It’s very cold at night even in the cabins so please dress well! Also bring a lot of extra snacks, because you really gonna need that energi! And ofc to see Fuego alive was such a unique experience!

5.00I am so glad I chose experience GT to do the hike with. The company organized everything perfectly giving us all the information we needed in order to be properly prepared for the trip. Our guides were encouraging, patient and very knowledgeable. Do not skimp on the amount of layers you bring on the hike because it is really needed. I had a tank top, a water proof long sleeve, a thermal layer on top, a waterproof hoodie, a puffer and a waterproof wind breaker. For majority of the hike up. For bottoms, I had a pair of capri leggings and hiking pants, and 2 separate pairs of socks packed. For the hike up to lunch break (about 3 hours) I had on my tank, water proof long sleeves and capri leggings. By lunch, I had put in my thermal layer over it + waterproof zip up hoodie and capri pants as it got pretty windy. And then once at base camp, I put on my puffer, gloves (with hand warmers inside), and neck gaiter to protect from the dust for the fuego hike. And then once at the ridge, I put on my waterproof jacket. I was very warm. The hike to see fuego was the hardest part for me. The hike to base camp is steep but there are moments of flat stretches to help recover. However, the hike to fuego starts downhill for about 30 minutes or so, and then very steep uphill with no flat stretches. It is important to bring snacks in your pocket and enough water to sustain you because guess what, the hike back, is also downhill and then very steep uphill, which sucks even more. However, the group was super encouraging and we all got through it together. Coming back after dinner, we got rewarded with the best eruptions without any clouds. It made it all worth it. I’d like to say a huge thank you to experience GT and our guides Erik and (I forgot his name but also very knowledgeable and experienced).

5.00Incredible experience. It was for me a medium difficulty hike , made harder by the colder temperatures atop the volcano. Our group chose to wait until dark to climb fuego to wait for the climate to clear which was an excellent idea but made it a bit more difficult to return in the darkness. Totally worth the effort though! Great guides.

5.00Awesome experience, i don’t usually write reviews but this team of people really does deserve it. soon as you walk into the agency they’re super welcoming, laid back, and chill, expectations are realistically laid out by the team. Our tour guide Roberto was awesome, very kind, great conversations, and great connection with the whole group. I will say we got super lucky with a small group of 6 people total. but i couldn’t recommend this company more! The only thing i would recommend is maybe bringing a better head light yourself! Thank you guys!

5.00Hiking with Experience GT was excellent! The guides were well organized, thorough in their instructions, kind, patient, and kept track of us all! They kept us safe, but also made sure we got the most out of our trip. The food portions felt plentiful and were pretty tasty. They made sure we all had the info we needed to be prepared the day before the trip, as well as gave us options for breakfast the day of the trip. It felt like traveling with family! I recommend seeing the area with this group!

5.00Amazing experience. The tour guides were so nice and enthusiastic (thank you Pablo and Eric). Despite the hard hike, doing El Fuego is a must! To experience the eruptions up close is unimaginably more beautiful and intense than watching them from afar (base camp).
