Lake Assal
Then we’ll go to Assal Lake. On the way, we will stop to admire the grandiose landscape of the Dimbiya canyon nicknamed the “Grand Canyon of Djibouti"
Lake Assal
A few kilometres further on, another stop at the stele of B. Borrel, the French magistrate whose partially charred body was found at the bottom of the cliff on the morning of 18 October 1995. The "Borrel affair" soured relations between Djibouti and France for several years. Then we leave the road to take the «access ramp» to Lake Assal. Located 153 metres below sea level, Lake Assal is one of the saltiest in the world. This fact combined with the very high evaporation due to the intense heat that reigns there, explains that salt has been mined there for hundreds of years. No living organism can survive in the waters of Assal Lake. We will be able to bathe there because we take fresh water for the indispensable shower avoiding being transformed into a statue of salt (lol); plastic shoes are necessary to avoid injuring oneself on the sharp and hard salt crystals of the salt ice pack.
The very high temperatures that prevail in this place do not make it very hospitable, but its legendary beauty, described in particular by the adventurer writer J. Kessel, makes it a site not to be missed. On a longer tour, we can organize a bivouac on site to enjoy the sunrise the next day, and hike to the Ardoukoba volcano. Lunch: picnic at Lake Assal. Afternoon: Return to Djibouti. Depending on the time available for this day, it is possible to visit the lava field between Assal and Goubet. Transfer to the airport at the end of the evening.

Guide Daoud has adapted to our desires to organize a superb discovery of the north of Djibouti. Despite the difficult weather at the start, he was able to reorganize the program so that we could fully enjoy the stay and discover the country in all its facets. A trip rich in traditions and natural wonders — we have an excellent memory and highly recommend its services!

It was a fantastic experience overall. I visited Djibouti for 3 days, and I was with this company for all 3 days. The first day the two Daouds picked me up from the airport. After a brief stop at my hotel (which I had booked myself), we were off to visiting the city and the three ethnic groups and their residences in the city. This part was customized per my request. The entire experience was very authentic and interesting. The next day we visited Lake Asal (as mentioned in the standard itinerary). This is a popular destination and within easy reach of the capital. Afterwards we saw the volcanic fault lines in the Afar region and visited a wonderful campsite in the Tadjourah region. apart from its scenic beauty my reason for visiting that was to try locating the only endemic bird of Djibouti. Although the Djibouti francolin is currently critically endangered, we found it and a got a great photo the next morning!

Daoud and Idriss are the people you need to explore Djibouti. Very hospitable very welcoming. Make sure to visit Tadjourah region of the AFAR people and experience culture of them who make up the most of the population of Djibouti. Highly recommended guides and their plans for my trip in Djibouti from the city to lac abbe to lac assal . I will definitely recommend and choose them for my next visit.
