Manastirea Voronet
In the second part of the day, you will have the chance to visit the most famous painted monastery in the world, Voronet Monastery. The frescoes of the monastery are dominated by intense shades of blue, and the southern wall depicts the best-preserved ‘Last Judgement’ fresco in Romania. The monastery was built in 1488 by Prince Stephen the Great in order to commemorate one of his victories against the Ottoman Empire.

Humor Monastery
You will start the day with a short drive to Humor Monastery, a small cross-shaped church built here in 1530, and it was dedicated to the Dormition of Virgin. Red hues dominate the exterior frescoes showing scenes from the lives of saints, as well as significant moments from the locals’ lives, such as the wars with the Turks.
Moldovita Monastery
Moldovita Monastery is the next stop on your itinerary. The outside frescoes of the church were painted by Toma of Suceava in 1537, and they contain strong nuances of gold and blue. The last judgment covers the entire surface of the western walls, and it includes several other scenes such as the Siege of Constantinople or the Tree of Jesse.
Transrarau
The highlight of the day is Transrarau Highway. With a total length of 28 kilometers (17 miles), it is known as the Treasury Road. You will be amazed by its curves and the scenery. It goes up to 1400 meters in altitude, and from there we will have a hike through the Rarau Mountains. You will have the chance to see the rock formations that emerged from the ground millions of years in order to give birth to these mountains.

I have wanted to visit the painted monasteries of Bucovina for 40 years. Florian proved to be a knowledgeable guide, willing to make accommodations to my special interests and full of excellent historical background. During the long drives we talked about all sorts of topics and his insights helped me really get a grasp on Romania past and present. As for the sights, autumn was the perfect time to enjoy the natural beauty. The monasteries are lovingly tended by nuns and the grounds offered a peaceful environment. I was reluctant to leave each one. Our accommodations were comfortable and beautiful with excellent cuisine and sincere hospitality.

Painted Bukovina churches are much more impressive than can be judged from photo's. Bonus is egg museum, which indeed contains more than 10 000 painted-engraved eggs. Special thanks to our guide Florin for a visit to additional monastery (not included in the program) and great patience answering a lot of questions about Bukovina in particular and Romania in general. Visited at the end of April, so no crowds of other tourists.

Our guide who was an art historian was fabulous. She was knowledgeable, knew people where we toured, was personable and went out of her way taking my companion to the ER and seeing her through the process.
