Axum was the center of the marine trading power known as the Aksumite Kingdom, which predated the earliest mentions in Roman era writings. Around 356, its ruler was converted to Christianity by Frumentius. Later, under the reign of Kaleb, Axum was a quasi-ally of Byzantium against the Persian Empire. The historical record is unclear, with ancient church records the primary contemporary sources.

Legends narrate in the Kebre Nagast (Book of Kings) how the city of Axum as early as the 10th century B.C. was already the city where the Queen of Sheba resided. It is told that the son of Queen of Sheba and King Solomon, Menelik, brought the Ark of the Covenant from Jerusalem to Axum and it remained there to this day, preserved in a sanctuary. Famous long before the time of Christ, Axum was the capital of the long Axumite reign, one of the oldest African empires and represented a crucial trade connecting-point between Africa and Asia for almost a thousand years. Visit the Granite stone Stele of Axum, the Tombs of King Kaleb and his son King G/Meskel, the Ezana’s stone inscriptions, Queen of Sheba’s palace and Swimming pool, and the Church of Zion, the final resting place of the True Ark of Covenant.

VISIT GOBO DURA, THE QUARY SITE This morning, you will visit Gobo Dura. This is important quarry for the Great stele of Aksum in which we found evidences of the unfinished stele and some marks on how the people quarried and transported the huge ones to the present location. At Gobo Dura tourists also can enjoy birds, monkeys /seasonally/,vegetation types, farming and generally the life of the rural society. Also, you will visit the lioness of Gobo Dura where a lioness is carved in a big granite stone. After a lunch a break, you will have a gentle walk on the old town of Axum. You will witness the change and continuity of the Axumite Empire through time. The old town is best place to enjoy an authentic Ethiopian coffee ceremony which is one of the most enjoyable events you can attend at an Ethiopian private house. The coffee is taken through its full life cycle of preparation in front of you in a ceremonial manner. Coffee is called ‘Bunna’ (boo-na) by the Ethiopians.

I met manager Asgedom Tazeze about 10 years ago in Axum. He was a young clever kid, full of positive energy and wonderful intentions and initiative. He learned the Ethiopian culture by living it, he learned english by speaking it with visitors, and with a bit of help from family, friends, school and the world wide web, he grew into a very open, professional organizer and guide, not only interested in sharing the rich culture of his home country, but also he developed a global view on the world and how it could (or should) be turned in a beautiful peaceful place.

The experience I had while on my trip to Axum was nothing less then amazing. Gelila was very kind and professional offering the best services to accommodate my needs. They are not only very professional but they ensure you enjoy the full Ethiopian experience. Thanks to Gelila I was able to film a documentary on my experience in Axum, hopefully it makes the big screens!

I went on the tour with Asgedom Tazeze and he was the most professional guide I have ever met . He showed me all the religious sites in Axum and taught me the customs and cultural norms of the people there and then we flew to Addis and toured the city and saw all the famous historical sites and museums and even went for fantastic meals that he recommended . I will tell you that Asgedom bent over backwards to do everything to assist . He went far above expectations . I had gotten a little but ill from drinking homemade beer and I think maybe my American stomach wasn’t ready for such adventures . I was flying out in the evening and Asgedom let me rest in his hotel room until I felt better and then he brought me to the airport . I am so happy that I made a true friend on this trip and you will too of you contact him when traveling to Ethiopia . Visited Axum, Gondar and Lalibella over the course of one week and had a wonderful time, thanks to Gelila Ethiopia Tours. The guide was extremely organized and had a well designed itinerary that covered all the major landmarks in the area. If you're anywhere near the Simean mountains, definitely make time to see the Gelada monkeys. Always felt safe and comfortable during the tour and would highly recommend this company to anyone visiting Ethiopia!

Our guide, Muez Tewelede (+251910483724), was very helpful and thoughtful during our stay in Axum. He was extremely klnowledeable and spoke very good English, which made our visits to the historical sites very insightful. He also paid attention to the details, such as good places to have lunch or get a cup of coffee. In addition to this, he went the extra mile by helping us to organise the next leg of our journey to a different part of Ethiopia. We really enjoyed spending time with Muez.

Over the course of several months' stay in Axum, I had numerous opportunities to avail myself of the services of Gelila Ethiopia Tours.These included guided tours as I familiarized myself with Axum and surrounding areas, had unexpected guests, and finally visits with family. I was impressed with the knowledge and professionalism of the tour owner/operator, Asgedom Tazeze, and the carefully chosen guides whom he enlisted. The day trips and extended tours were affordably priced, the van impeccably clean, and the drivers were courteous and cautious. The guides were punctual, flexible, and patient, especially when it came to shopping, toilet stops, and meals. In Axum, the Stelae, Queen of Sheba bath and palace, and St. Mary of Zion Church (and the Ark of the Covenant) are a must. Have the guide enlist a brief tour of the church and its illuminated texts. These holy books are written in the ancient script of Geez. Nearby sites include the rock-hewn churches and monasteries. Note that women are not allowed in some venues, so plan accordingly. Take the fly/drive excursions to Lalibela and Gondar. Lalibela and the churches are magnificent and awe-inspiring. The castles at Gondar give a taste of the ancient history of Ethiopia. Trek into the Simien mountains for the day in order to see the Gelada monkeys. Gelila Ethiopia Tours can work with your budget and will find great accommodations that are very clean and comfortable and affordable. Excellent service from start to finish.

Asgedom is the man, professional and knowledgable! Buses were in great condition, I just did a small tour around Axum and Yeha but he has other packages on offer also. Would not hesitate to recommend!!
