Progressing beyond the least explored region in Nepal via an off-the-beaten-path, Upper Mustang Trekking is the one of a kind approach to getting acquainted with the mystical world of the time-honored Buddhist kingdom of Mustang. Since its inception by the warrior Ame Pal in 1380; the walled city of Lo Manthang along with the ancient realm of Upper Mustang was segregated from the rest of the world from the 14th century. Though limited access was granted to the Nepalese, it was still forbidden for outsiders until 1992. Consequently, this territory gained the opportunity to gradually develop and preserve its contrasting culture and classic traditions that share similarities with Tibet.

For the first time in Nepal, trekking in the upper Mustang was a unique experience. Without any technical difficulties, but to be tackled with good training due to the distance to be covered and the altitude (reached in any case gradually), this trek gave me the opportunity to get to know a valley in the Himalayas where, although it has changed in the last 30 years, especially due to the road that has reshaped the territory in some places, the lifestyle of the people who live there seems to have been frozen in time. The encounter with the Tibetan and Buddhist culture was exciting. I really appreciated the helpfulness, flexibility and friendliness of our guide Shiva in dealing with unforeseen events and schedule changes. Ramhari from the agency was also extremely helpful, responding quickly to every request for information; it's a pity I couldn't meet him in person because he was busy on another trek. I am also very grateful to the porters Binod and Sujan. By sharing time and effort with all of them, a good relationship was created. An extremely positive experience, therefore, and I certainly have thoughts for the next trip to Nepal :-)

The Upper Mustang trek is not an easy trek but the landscapes are sumptuous and the people charming. You have to pass passes at more than 4000 m to discover the villages nestled in the valleys. The specificity of this trek is the passage through the town of Muktinat, an important religious center, then the passage through the Thorung pass at 5416 m: an unforgettable experience. We then join the Anapurna trek which gently brings us back to Benissahar through the pine forests against the impressive backdrop of the Anapurna range. Our guide Dendi and our porter Shiva were perfect from start to finish. I highly recommend this 17-day trek masterfully organized by Ramhiri and his local agency: Himalayan Trekking Path.
