Triton Fountain
The Triton Fountain is a striking modern fountain located just outside Valletta’s City Gate, featuring three bronze Tritons holding up a large basin. Designed by sculptor Vincent Apap and architect Victor Anastasi and completed in 1959, it has become one of the city’s most iconic landmarks, symbolizing Malta’s connection to the sea. The fountain was restored and relocated slightly in recent years, and today it serves as a dramatic entrance point to Valletta, especially when illuminated at night and set against the backdrop of the city’s fortified walls.
Valletta City Gate
The City Gate is the main entrance to Valletta and a striking example of contemporary architectural design integrated into historic fortifications. The current gate, completed in 2014, was designed by renowned Italian architect Renzo Piano as part of a major redevelopment project that also included the new Parliament building and the open-air Royal Opera House ruins nearby. Unlike earlier, more decorative gates, this version is minimalist, consisting of massive limestone walls that create a dramatic passage into the city, emphasizing Valletta’s identity as a fortified capital while offering a modern interpretation of its historic entrance.
