  This tour was one of the highlights of our two week vacation. Our guide, Elma, had great energy and could answer any question that we had. The palace was beautiful and the history was told in fun stories. It was December, so the gardens were not in bloom, but the tour of the grounds was well worth it. If you can only choose one tour, I highly recommend this one. And the cafe was a treat with scrumptious desserts!

  We enjoyed our tour of the palace, and the history behind it. The rooms we viewed were far above our expectations. Even our grandson, who did not seem too enthused about the tour, was surprised and impressed by the grandeur. The gardens were impressive even in winter. I would love to see them in the spring! Our guide, Gabby was very informative, having grown up in the immediate vicinity.

  Christine gave us a wonderful tour of the palace at Schonbrunn. She was very patient with the group, and made sure everyone had a working headset, even if user error. She kept our group together and focused, despite very large crowds. It was clear she enjoyed sharing the history of Austria and the Hapsburgs. If you are taking this tour during winter, I highly recommend earlier in the day (start by 2pm), as we lost light due to early winter sunset and could not see a majority of the gardens as they are not lit. However, seeing the beautiful Christmas market outside the palace lit up at night was a treat. P.S. This is the most visited tourist site in Austria so be prepared for large crowds inside and out.

  A crowded tour! The Schonbrunn tour is worth doing if you are in Vienna! It is possible that you should do it without a guide, considering the large number of visitors! I know that the emphasis of this review will be on the crowds, but this is not my first time in Vienna and not my first time visiting Schonbrunn. We decided to do this tour with a guide for children. Unfortunately, it is very crowded in the castle during Christmas. I think it is always crowded, but during Christmas it was very, very crowded. You have to take this into account if you have small children! Our family did not have this problem, but the crowds were an impediment especially for the guided tour. Cristina, our guide, was ok, she provided us with a series of useful information. I thought she was a bit rushed to finish faster, maybe where we were on the last tour, cold outside and crowded! I don't know if she could have done more in that crowd! In front of Schonbrunn there is a Christmas market during this period, which creates a wonderful atmosphere. The illuminated gardens (paid separately) can be the highlight of a visit to Schonbrunn during this period! You should consider, in winter, to equip yourself well because it is very cold, not necessarily cold but the wind that always blows. At the entrance to the castle there is a cloakroom where you can leave your things, inside being a pleasant atmosphere.

  Our guide truly made the history come alive. I felt as though I had stepped back in time from the very beginning of the tour. We had a truly wonderful experience on the Schönbrunn Palace and Gardens tour, and our guide was absolutely fabulous. He was incredibly knowledgeable and thoughtful, regularly checking in with our group and making the experience feel personal and engaging. One of the highlights was learning about Maria Theresa and her sixteen children, and how her family connections intertwined with major historical figures such as Marie Antoinette and Napoleon Bonaparte. The way these stories were woven together brought European history vividly to life. Our guide also shared powerful and sobering moments from the palace’s later history, including that Adolf Hitler was the only person ever allowed to stand on the palace balcony. Visitors are not permitted there, with the sole exception being a special state approved visit granted to Holocaust survivors just two years ago. This was shared with great respect and left a lasting impression. Another fascinating story was about Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, who visited the palace as a young child. Our guide explained that Mozart appears in one of the palace paintings because by the time it was completed, he was already famous. The painting itself took years to create, with individual portraits painted separately and later carefully combined into one magnificent work. This tour was engaging, thoughtful, and deeply enriching. We left with a greater understanding of European history. I highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Vienna.

  There is a serious flaw in the Viator app that allows users to book overlapping tours. When I realized this error, I rushed to cancel one of the bookings and, in the process, accidentally rebooked it in a language other than English. Despite this, I still attempted to attend the tour. However, the meeting-point instructions in the app were extremely unclear. The directions stated to meet at Café Gerstner, without specifying which location, even though there are multiple cafés with that name. My GPS directed me to the downtown location rather than the one near the palace. At no point in the booking details was it clearly stated that I needed to travel to the palace on my own. Based on my extensive experience using Viator, I reasonably assumed we would meet the guide first and then proceed together to the attraction. As a result of these issues—none of which were clearly disclosed—I missed the tour entirely and lost the full cost of my booking. While I understand that a refund may not be possible, I believe this situation warrants some form of compensation. I am requesting a credit toward a future Viator tour in recognition of the app’s shortcomings and the unclear instructions provided. I have used Viator many times without issue, but this experience was extremely disappointing and should be addressed to prevent similar situations for other customers.

  This was a great tour of Schönbrunn Palace. Definitely a must do when you’re in Vienna. We did our tour at 3pm and it ended around 5-5:30 during the Xmas holidays. In looking back, I would recommend doing this earlier in the day, like before lunch and during daylight. The palace area is so large, I would use the tour to start and then use the rest of the day exploring the other areas. I definitely recommend going to Cafe Gloriette and having a coffee while it is open. The view is stunning and it takes a good 20 minutes to walk there uphill, so definitely give yourself time if you’re going to the cafe. The Palace tour inside was fascinating and our guide, Harry, was great at explaining the history and little known facts about the royal Habsburg family. His English was great and he answered many questions and provided a short garden tour at the end. Only negative was that when our tour finished around 5pm, it was already dark, so we were not able to appreciate the beauty of the grounds had it been daytime. A must do tour!
