Paia
No trip to Maui is complete without a trip to Paia, Maui’s coolest little town. Located on the North Shore, Paia started as a plantation town with the opening of Paia Store in 1896 to serve the needs of the multi-cultural plantation workers of Paia Sugar Mill.
Ke'anae Arboretum
Located adjacent to the Pi'ina'au Stream, the Ke'anae Arboretum features terraces built by ancient Hawaiians for cultivating taro, which was a staple of their diet. A paved walkway measuring 0.6 miles runs through the arboretum, showcasing a diverse array of timber, fruit, and ornamental trees from different tropical regions of the world, many of which are labeled with nameplates. With over 150 types of tropical plants, including taro, the arboretum is an excellent spot to observe native flowers and marvel at the vibrant bark of rainbow eucalyptus trees.

5.00We had a great day with John who took my family on a tour of the road to Hana. He was so knowledgeable of Maui and Hawaii and we loved learning about the history and nature. We traveled with my boys (4 & 6) and by the end of the day they were wondering why we couldn’t spend every day with John. Hiring John allowed us to relax and enjoy the beauty of the country with an expert. I highly recommend using John as your guide.

5.00We cruised to Hawaii and just happened to sail right into a fairly crazy winter storm.. we were a tiny bit concerned about the conditions on the road (there were a million crazy storm warnings etc), and we were so grateful we had Charlie to take us on this windy road to Hana in the unpredictable weather! Charlie was experienced and took us to amazing stops along the way! He taught us about the local flora and fauna! We even got to stop and see some turtles on the beach! Although the weather was a bit dicey on this whole trip, our journey on the road to Hana was definitely one of our most memorable! I definitely recommend booking this excursion vs driving yourself as these roads are insanely windy and NARROW! Plus, not worrying about finding a parking space was nice! Didn’t get as many pictures as I should have because I was just enjoying the views and the ride! Def bring some nausea meds if you are prone to getting carsick though!

5.00Our Road to Hana tour was absolutely fantastic and one of the highlights of our trip to Maui. Having Luke as our private guide made the entire experience so much more relaxed and enjoyable. Instead of worrying about driving winding roads ourselves, we were able to sit back, take in the incredible scenery, and stop whenever we wanted. Luke was knowledgeable, friendly, and clearly passionate about the island. The pacing of the tour was perfect - never rushed, but we still managed to see so many amazing places. The tour was truly memorable and we would highly recommend doing a private tour.

5.00What a wonderful day driving the Road to Hana! Our tour Guide David was very Knowledgeable!! He knew so much about plants and the history of the island! My mind was blown!! We were on a cruise and after some confusion with the office about a meeting point….David picked us up right at the long’s across from the pier….just as we were previously told when we scheduled. Was so nice not to worry about driving the road to Hana ourselves. Made it so much more fun!

5.00My husband, our two kids (14 and 11), and I had the best day ever on the VIP Private Road to Hana tour with our guide, Koby. He was a fantastic guide: easy to talk to, incredibly knowledgeable, and great at adjusting the plan to fit our family. He shared so much meaningful historical and cultural context about the places we visited, and he also gave us the perfect balance of adventure and downtime so all four of us had fun. He had a great way of keeping everyone engaged. We started the day with a beautiful hike (barefoot for some of us!) through a bamboo forest to two waterfalls, followed by exploring a cave hidden beneath a banyan tree. Later, we took another short hike to a third waterfall (Koby saved the day here when my husband jumped in with his glasses still on). Other highlights included visiting Waiʻānapanapa State Park, Aunty Sandy’s famous banana bread (we say it is worth the hype), picnic lunch of Huli Huli chicken, meeting adorable Chanelle the pig and her piglets after tasting cacao beans and chocolate at East Maui Chocolate, and seeing countless beautiful trees, waterfalls, historic sites, and tasting fruit along the way. On our way back, we stopped to watch surfers at another black sand beach and ended the day with a visit to the sea turtles at Ho‘okipa Beach. It was truly one of the best days of our entire trip to Hawai‘i, and we feel so lucky to have had such a friendly, fun guide. A hui hou!

5.00John was an awesome tour guide with history and facts along the way. Accommodating for our family from ages 83 to 23. John also gave great recommendations for trip local eats and site seeing. So glad I did not drive myself, I would not have been able to enjoy the scenery around me.

5.00Our family’s Road to Hana VIP Tour with driver John was hands-down one of the best decisions we made in Maui—no regrets, just pure magic! John was incredibly talkative and informative, sharing wonderful stories about Hawaiian history, culture, local plants, legends, and hidden spots along the route. He kept everything engaging without overwhelming us, and he tailored stops perfectly to our group (including young kids), ensuring we had time for photos, breaks, and snacks. But what really stood out this time was his excellent driving—seriously impressive on those legendary winding, narrow roads with all the switchbacks. Despite the twists and turns (and occasional misty rain adding to the adventure), no one in our family experienced any nausea or motion sickness at all. John navigated everything smoothly and confidently, keeping the ride comfortable and safe in the nice, air-conditioned VIP vehicle. It made the whole day relaxing instead of stressful—huge win compared to self-driving! The scenery was breathtaking, as captured in our photos: cascading waterfalls in lush rainforests, dramatic black sand beaches with crashing waves (kids loved exploring the volcanic shores), bamboo groves, massive banyan trees, tropical flowers, rocky coastlines, and stunning ocean overlooks. We stopped at multiple waterfalls for misty views and pics, played on beaches, and soaked in panoramic vistas. John pointed out things we’d have missed otherwise and suggested fun photo spots. He was also just genuinely nice—patient with the kids, chatty in a warm way, and made sure everyone felt taken care of. The private VIP setup meant no rushing, no crowds at key spots, and a personalized pace. If you’re thinking about the Road to Hana, skip the DIY stress (especially with motion concerns) and book the VIP private tour—request John if you can!
