On this tour we will explore The National Park of “Blue Eye,” and The Fortress Lekuresi. Both sites are attractive tourist places, both rich in history and beauty. It’s a very picturesque area, where crystal clear water gushes out from within the mountain Mali i Gjërë. This actual spring is the largest and a most interesting source among the other 18 springs that flow from Mali i Gjërë. It has been declared a Natural Monument and has an oval shape similar to the shape of an eye. The spring has great depth, which goes up to 50m, and it’s surrounded by dense and lush vegetation. All in all, the area offers a great time out for adults, as well as for children.

The Blue Eye

As unexpectedly spectacular as the coast of Southern Albania is (and it is magnificent!) what you would expect to see there are sights reminiscent of the Mediterranean more so than the tropics. Yet, as we know by now, Albania is the land of the unexpected! The country hides its small tropical paradise, aptly called the Blue Eye (in Albanian: Syri i Kaltër). Perhaps the most breathtakingly beautiful sight in Albania, the Blue Eye is located about a 30-minute drive away from the coastal city of Saranda on the road to Gjirokastra (all places to see, by the way!). Surely, the surprise factor adds to the beauty of the entire experience. To find the tropics in Albania is no small feat! Perhaps describing the multidimensionality and depth of this surreal beauty is futile, but one must try! The landscape leading to the Blue Eye uncovers this anomaly of nature as you will find yourself surrounded by palm trees, wild ferns and tropical plants, as well as dense, mountainous forest vegetation of oaks and sycamores, all at once! This vegetation is kept lush and glorious by the spring flowing down the mountain into the Bistrica River. A total of eighteen springs are dispersed along the site! The freshwater spring from the Gjerë (in English: Wide) Mountain flows into the Blue Eye and creates a natural pool with depths of about 50 meters. Or, so they say! The actual depth has not yet been determined. Many divers have tried to get to the bottom of it, to no avail.

Lekuresi Castle

Visit for views over Saranda town and the Ksamil Islands from its perch on a mountain. All that remains of the castle are its ancient walls, but a small restaurant located inside has converted a part of the ruins into a restaurant terrace. From this cafe take in views of the sea and the town below as you sample the traditional cuisine. You may have to approach the bar to order during the busy peak season. Admission to the castle is free and you can roam around the stone walls, but wear appropriate hiking shoes to protect your feet from the brush and rocks. We booked a tour with a licensed tour guide. As there were only two of us, we were sent a driver who was very nice. But was not a guide. He dropped us off at the two destinations, but there was no guiding involved. We did find another group being guided and took advantage of their knowledge, but we should have been told ahead of time there was no guide available, so we could have made alternative arrangements with another company.

Good tour and tour guide to the Blue Eye and Lekuresi castel. Aleksia did a good job telling us about the Blue Eye and castel and we enjoyed the rides to both areas. The views from the castel were amazing and the Blue Eye was beautiful.

The sites we saw were amazing. The tour was very confusing on where to meet, and the driver didn't speak English. The tour guide didn't say anything o the tour about anything, unless we asked him specifically, his English was fine. Maybe they could work on giving some details of the country and sites on the drive. Overall we enjoyed where we went and had a good day. Would recommend the tour but not the tour company.

We had a really lovely experience on our trip in Sarandë. Our guide was incredibly sweet, welcoming and very knowledgeable about both the region’s history, culture and the little details one would otherwise have forgotten. This made the experience both personal and educational. The trip led us to some of the most beautiful places in the area – from the cozy streets of the city to impressive viewpoints where we could enjoy the clear blue colors of the sea and the dramatic mountain landscapes around Sarandë. Along the way we got lots of exciting stories and little anecdotes, which gave us a completely different insight than if we had just walked around ourselves. The guide made sure everyone in the group felt comfortable and there was plenty of time to ask questions, take pictures and enjoy the atmosphere. We felt both welcome and well taken care of all the way through. All in all, it was a super nice trip, where we both saw and experienced a lot, but also felt inspired and enriched by the guide’s stories. An experience we can warmly recommend to others who visit Sarandë.

Both were beautiful. The guide was very kind and explained the history of the place. We were delighted. The bus was well air conditioned and fortunately it was very hot.

We truly enjoyed our visit and tour of the national Park of Blue Eye & Lekuresi castle. Our guide, Jona and the company were fabulous. Jona was very informative and was a delight to spend our day with. She had a great suggestion to include Butrint National Archeological Park which was very interesting to see and truthfully the highlight of our day. We highly recommend this company and Jona….they were both most professional and informative. It was about a 5 hour tour, but for us the private tour was the way to go. Enjoy!

It was better than taken a taxi, not know who would be driving. Cost was similar. The driver spoke very little English but was on a communicating needed information. The views at both places was worth the trip vs a ship tour that was twice as much and took a lot more time.

Bathrooms are filthy. I wouldn’t recommend visiting as I don’t think it was worth it, there are much better places with the same clear water

Avoid in summer because high temperatures do not help at all. Very nice and well organized, for those who do not want to walk so much on foot there is the shuttle service (3 € each way p.p.) and possibility to rent scooters and electric scooters. Admission is 0,50€ so very cheap prices. Honestly in summer I do not Recommendation because once you get to the blue eye you can not even swim because it is all fenced (although many tourists still do not respect the rules). There is also the possibility to rent kayaks/canoes and take a tour to see the place from another perspective. Paid parking from 3 to 8€ approximately, depending on the hours but for what little there is to do 3/4h are more than enough. It has to be said that personally I would not do it again because it is not worth it, the blue eye is small and practically the “bridge” to observe it well is right above it and consequently taken by the people.

Really good experience, we were able to get picked up right from our hotel. The driver was very respectful and we had great communication from the tour provider about our pick up spot. This tour was really just a ride to the spots we wanted to see, which was exactly what we were looking for. I was glad they had availability later in the day and not just early in the morning.
