Having traveled to Japan a few times, I found myself up north exploring a new area & wanting a break from the noise. This tour was perfect for that! Quinlan was my guide - he’s a fantastic story teller, professional, observant, has huge respect for culture & history, & is an all around great bloke to hang with. I was wow’ing at all the scenery he took me to & it exceeded my imaginations. It felt like I was hanging out with a friend for the day & I’m so glad I did this.

Quinlan was a superb guide with great knowledge of the geological and historical landscapes of the Hachimantai area. Although it did rain a little through our tour, there wasn't much of a problem since we had a car taking us to the main points. I was able to learn so much about how the people in this area had adapted and used the natural resources available to them. My favorite was the Goshogake onsen trail which was a wonder itself. Wish I had stayed longer to visit the onsen itself, the tour itself had made me realize how much of Tohoku area remains undiscovered to most tourists.

It was an amazing tour! Our guide, Quinlan, was cheerful and friendly, and with him around, we didn’t have to worry about bears at all! He showed great respect for both history and nature, and his explanations were very clear and easy to understand. We were also lucky with the weather—the distant mountains were beautifully visible.

One trend to buck is to keep circling the same tourist traps when visiting Japan. In my first two trips a travel company made recommendations but situated us in the same old places. When visiting Japan for my 40th birthday I wanted to do something special and knew Quinlan from his YouTube channel and asked if he could take my wife and I on a tour of north Japan, a place I was yet to explore. I told Quinlan after the tour that this was the jewel in the ground of our 3 week vacation. It was expertly coordinated, with regular toilet stops, revisions based on weather and knowledge of the area and a huge variety of different fascinating locations that as someone with a degree in geology gave us lots to talk about. I feel enriched with knowledge of Japanese history, culture and the Japanese environment and as hikers ourselves this was one of the best trails we’ve walked. An exceptional guide, a kind and fun host. It’s 100% about who guides you. Have an adventure with Quinlan and make some exceptional memories.

My family and I had a wonderful day with Katy and Mr. Miyagi. They are lovely people and taught us a lot about the sites we visited. The itinerary was well designed and it covered so many beautiful sites in one day that we could not have covered by public transportation. We would love to come back and explore different areas with them! Thank you so much Northern Japan Horizons for providing us with this memorable experience.
