A full day tour exploring the flora, fauna and natural wonders of Rincón de la Vieja Volcano National Park. The day consists of a moderate 2-hour hike where you will see wildlife and volcanic activity. Next we will visit the Oropendola Waterfall where you can swim and play in the water. After the waterfall, it is time to eat a typical Costa Rican lunch following a trip to relax at the hot springs and enjoy a volcanic mud bath.

National Park Hike With our bilingual naturalist guide, you'll walk 3.5-km (2 miles) in Las Pailas circular path through the tropical forest to enjoy the best views of the volcano, incredible nature, volcanic activity, and wildlife. The park is home to more than 300 species of birds, and many other animals, such as armadillos, bays, iguanas, coatis and white-faced monkeys, howler monkeys, spider monkeys, toucans, turkeys, and much more. You will stop to view the volcanic activity including bubbling mud pots, fumaroles, and a mini crater. The Las Pailas sector spectacularly shows the power of the Rincon de la Vieja volcano, the most active and largest volcano in Guanacaste, Costa Rica. Steam and sulfur come from natural fumaroles of the yellow and rusty soil. Witness clay pails in various shades of brown with boiling volcanic water, fine gray volcanic mud bubbles and explosions in large pails. This volcano is like no other in Costa Rica.
Oropendola Warterfall
After the hike, take a short walk off the beaten path to Oropendola Waterfall just outside of the park, where you can jump in and swim in the blue lagoon.

5.00Daphné (our guide) and Miguel (our driver) were great. We navigated a very busy tourist destination in a way that felt like we were alone in our group. The hike was just long enough and we were able to get a good understanding of the volcano and its relationship with the land. The waterfall swim was very refreshing and the hot springs were a delight. Lunch was a buffet with a good variety of food. Highly recommended 👌

Poor communication for people that self drive

3.00The tour was good, but communication was not. We chose the self drive option. The rest of our group (on the bus) was about 40 minutes late getting there. When we arrived at the waterfall, we found out that everyone that had been on the bus had already changed into their bathing suits. No one told the 4 of us that were traveling by car that we should have already changed so we missed swimming in the waterfall. My friend commented to one of the staff that we didn’t realize that there were no changing facilities. His response was “you should have hired a guide” and she responded “we did” and pointed to our guide. After this experience, we were too hot and tired to continue on to the hot springs and mud bath, so we just left and drove back to Liberia. My husband and I were very disappointed especially since we had gone on a similar tour last year in la Fortuna and it was marvellous.

5.00JC was an awesome tour guide and gave us plenty of opportunities to stop for pictures and took some for us. It was a pretty large group but he kept us on schedule so we could make it to each activity and get to lunch on time. He even stopped to teach us about some of the native plants and animals we would see on our tour. Our group had age 7 through 82 years old and the tour felt accessible to all of us. The hike was a challenge but we were all able to make it through. The waterfall felt amazing after the hike. I do wish the hike was a bit shorter to make more time for the waterfall and hot springs, but the whole experience was great nonetheless.

5.00Paul for the win! Paul was our tour guide for an all-day excursion from Tamarindo to Buena Vista Rincon de la Vieja National Park. He truly made the tour exceptional and went above and beyond. He took photos and videos of us all day so that we didn't have to. He chatted with us in english (and spanish for those of us wanting practice). The van was comfortable, clean and well stocked with ice cold water. He kept all of our belongings safe all day. The tour itself was very fun with a long waterslide, zip lining, a hike to waterfalls, hanging bridges, a toucan sighting, horseback riding, a bit of history, and a delicious lunch. If Epcot had a Costa Rica land, this would be it!!!

2.00The tour had some nice moments, but overall it felt very rushed. I didn’t feel like there was enough time to really enjoy the experience, which made it a bit stressful. I also left feeling unsure about how I was supposed to get back to my hotel after the tour, which added unnecessary worry. The hike was also different from how it was described. Also Togo to the waterfall, there are several bridges you needed to cross, and if you’re afraid of heights this could be quite uncomfortable. It would have been helpful to know that in advance. Just something to keep in mind for future guests so expectations are clearer.

4.00Shuttle and buses were on time for pick up and drop offs. The hike around the volcano base was a medium level hike. Very nice to have a tour guide to show you everything as it would have been plain without him. Didn’t see any animals or wildlife which was a bit disappointing for us. The waterfall was a long wait but a good experience. Hot springs and mud bath were nice. The lunch buffet was also good, only it was the same options we had had at the resort restaurant all week. Overall the day was good. Was hoping to see more of the volcano itself but saw the bubbling mud in one area. Felt our stuff we left on the bus was always safe as the driver stayed with it at each stop. Not recommended for young kids tho as it is a LOT of walking and up/down stairs.
