Parque Nacional Rincon de la Vieja
National Park Hike With our bilingual naturalist guide, you'll walk 3.5-km (2 miles) in Las Pailas circular path through the tropical forest to enjoy the best views of the volcano, incredible nature, volcanic activity, and wildlife. The park is home to more than 300 species of birds, and many other animals, such as armadillos, bays, iguanas, coatis and white-faced monkeys, howler monkeys, spider monkeys, toucans, turkeys, and much more. You will stop to view the volcanic activity including bubbling mud pots, fumaroles, and a mini crater. The Las Pailas sector spectacularly shows the power of the Rincon de la Vieja volcano, the most active and largest volcano in Guanacaste, Costa Rica. Steam and sulfur come from natural fumaroles of the yellow and rusty soil. Witness clay pails in various shades of brown with boiling volcanic water, fine gray volcanic mud bubbles and explosions in large pails. This volcano is like no other in Costa Rica.
Oropendola Warterfall
After the hike, take a short walk off the beaten path to Oropendola Waterfall just outside of the park, where you can jump in and swim in the blue lagoon.

The staff was friendly and tour was overall good value. I would suggest less time walking around in the 2.5mile hike as we could allot more time to lunch and especially the mud bath and hot springs. The hike took over 3 hours, when it should only take no more than 2 hours or less and then lunch was hurried ( I was on my way back from grabbing fruit/dessert when my table was already rushed to get up and leave) and when we arrived at the hot spring spot, we only had under 45 min to enjoy the mud and hot springs, it takes 10-15 min to walk (each way) to the hot spring area and with the crowds, colliding with other tour groups, there wasn’t much time to soak and really enjoy the mud exfoliation, and the hot springs pools.

Pros: tour is as advertised; you go on a 2 hour hike seeing mudpots/volcanic vents and the rainforest; you get to swim near a beautiful waterfall; buffet lunch included; then ends with about an hour and a half at the Rio negro hot springs, where you can also do a volcanic mud bath. Was a full day trip (7:30am -5:30pm for us). Felt safe the whole time. Transportation was on time. Got to see a lot of monkeys. Cons: if you are staying at certain hotels, they will charge you an extra $50 the day before the excursion for transportation services, so be aware of the fine print; as a result of the extra cost, it was not the cheapest excursion option. Additionally, our guide was kind of hands off - very minimal teaching but would gladly answer any questions; he did not accompany us down to the hot springs, so we had no one to give us directions on how to do the mud bath - other tour groups had their guide down there with them explaining the process). We had a better experience booking through “Frank the Tank” excursions - would highly recommended them instead, but they don’t go to Rio negro, which is where I really wanted to go.

It’s a very long day - but they run it all so smoothly! Our guide (Kevin Pina) was so knowledgeable and keeps everything on time. The volcano was awesome, the waterfall swim is spectacular and the hot springs are an experience for sure! The lunch was in a very cool spot and delicious. Definitely worth it!
