Fagradalsfjall Volcano
From your viewing point, you’ll witness the raw power of nature as molten lava flows from deep within the earth. The Fagradalsfjall volcano, part of Iceland’s active Reykjanes Peninsula, first erupted in 2021 after lying dormant for over 6,000 years. Since then, it has seen several spectacular eruptions, creating new craters and reshaping the surrounding landscape. You’ll see glowing lava fields, rising steam, and freshly formed rock—an unforgettable reminder of Iceland’s volcanic energy. This is one of the safest and most accessible volcanic viewing experiences in the world.
From your viewpoint, you’ll overlook Geldingadalir, the valley where the first eruption on the Reykjanes Peninsula in over 800 years began in March 2021. This marked the start of a new volcanic era in the region. Unlike explosive eruptions, Geldingadalir featured slow, flowing lava, creating glowing rivers of fire and new land formations. The eruption captivated the world with its beauty and accessibility—offering a rare chance to safely witness an active volcano shaping the Earth in real time. The surrounding landscape still bears vivid signs of this powerful event.

We went with Tobi (who actually has a much more difficult Icelandic name in the Superjeep. And it was really worth it. With gale force, we would have had difficulty making it on foot, and would have had to do without the interesting, entertaining information and stories. In our imagination we saw the liquid red lava flowing through the valley in front of the huge lava fields. The landscape alone is overwhelming. Without the tour, we would have really missed something, or had to torture ourselves on foot in the storm. Tack, Tobias, it was great!

We took this tour a couple weeks after the July 2025 eruption. It was a wonderful experience! Highly recommend the tour! We are family of 3 (our son is 10 years old). Our tour was small group of about 9 people & fit comfortably in the cool super jeep. Our guide & driver was Tobi. (I'm so sorry Tobi, I still can't to remember your full name...😜) Tobi was very professional, chill & funny. He gave a lot of informative insight about volcanoes activities in Iceland, how Icelandic people dealt with it and very patient answering lots of questions from our group. And bonus, he is great with taking pictures too. The drive route was very challenging and steep, but we know we are in good hands. Although u can't see the active red lava anymore, but u can see all the new black lavas with smokes everywhere. What I like about this tour, we were able to see different viewing points of latest eruption & Tobi also drove us to the closest site we were allowed so we can take closer look at the new lava. My recommendation -- if you have children with you, take this tour instead walking. Weather changes drastically every time in Iceland, although it was August but it was freeeezing up there on the mountain. The hike was about 1.5 -2 hours if you want to do by foot. There were still many areas that were taped due lavas were still soft and might dangerous to walk on it. Having a guide with lots of knowledge, definitely makes you feel safe.
