Thousands of Years in the Making a Wonderland of Stunning Geothermal Activity. The technical description for this remarkable place is that it’s part of an 18-sq. km active geothermal park at the northern perimeter of the Reporoa Caldera (a collapsed volcanic crater) formed 230,000 years ago within the Taupo Volcanic Zone. Expensive for what there is to see. A number of vents - broadly similar - issuing sulfurous gases. Then a number of pools some with gas and water, others with mud making satisfying bubbling sounds. There were several pools, at various levels connected by steps. It is nice that some pools have walkways across them. Compared with Yellowstone National Park the pools are small and the bacteria (which produce amazing colours at Yellowstone) are muted. There is one good very yellow pool just before you leave. There was a nice cafe, amply parking. The admission process was a bit slow.

We were surprised to learn the geyser Lady Knox does not erupt on its own and only erupts once a day because a staff member drops soap in its mouth every morning at 10:15. That fact made it seem a lot less special. Waiotapu was also fairly crowded, so it felt like walking around a park in a clump. The concept of these hot springs is more interesting in my head than in reality.

We kicked off with the 10.15am (soap powder fuelled) geyser eruption. Spectacular and surprisingly moving accompanied by a solo maori song. Then spent a good couple of hours exploring. There are several walk options of different lengths. We did them all as a reasonably fit group in trainers. Not blessed with sunshine but it didnt matter. The park is otherworldly

Excellent venue and pathways so easy to get around. You need to be there at least 9.30am to see the Lady Knox Geyser as everybody else is of the same mind. The colours of the thermal pools are amazing.

Wai-O-Tapo is a colourful and awe-inspiring place with its natural thermal wonders! The bird life is also stunning and we were delighted to spot a NZ woodpecker being fed by a smaller bird! Thoroughly enjoyed our visit and recommend this as a must-do if you are visiting Rotorua.

When we arrived we were told to go straight to the Lady Knox geyser.. So we ended up in a crowd in which people stood other benches so we couldnt see anyway.. about 3 people read to us about the geyser .. then soap was poured in to make it work.. hugely disappointing..and then we realized that if we had just gone straight to the actual park, we would have had a walk around without hordes of people taking up all the viewing sites.

The trails through the hot springs were very interesting. The geyser on the other hand was artificial. They had to start a chemical reaction by pouring soap into the man-made hole. Very artificial. However the trails made the trip worthwhile.
