Thousands of Years in the Making a Wonderland of Stunning Geothermal Activity. The technical description for this remarkable place is that it’s part of an 18-sq. km active geothermal park at the northern perimeter of the Reporoa Caldera (a collapsed volcanic crater) formed 230,000 years ago within the Taupo Volcanic Zone. Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland
Visitors come to Wai-O-Tapu to marvel at the hot pools, volcanic craters and steaming fissures of this otherworldly area. Explore the natural geothermal environment on your own. Walk along well-marked paths that take you to brilliantly colored steaming pools that bubble and hiss with thermal activity. Hear a presentation given daily at 10:15am when the Lady Knox Geyser erupts. Admire the native bush along your walk. Our comprehensive guide map provided with your ticket contains a great deal of useful information about the features within the park. There are currently translations available in German, French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Russian and Czech. Expect to spend between 45-90 minutes at Wai-O Tapu with plenty of time to take great photos of the spectacular scenery. If you want to rest or grab a bite to eat, there's a cafe, souvenir shop, picnic area and lookout point near the visitor center.

4.00Don't compare this to Yellowstone. It a much smaller area that you can visit in a few hours. There is one geyser that is set off chemically each day. If you have never seen a geyser then go see it, otherwise enjoy the rest of the park. There are 3 hiking trail loops that connect to each other so you can decide to do 1 or all as you go. The walking is not difficult. The different types of hot pools are facinating as are the birds in the area. Even though it was busy, we didn't have problems getting good pictures and going at our own pace. There are a lot of park "rangers" to help you as you move through the park. Many of the names are in Te Reo Maori, everyone in NZ knows the language and are happy to help with the pronunciations.

5.00Such a beautiful place to visit. Right from booking the tickets here to arriving at the park and then walking around everything was so effortless. On arrival one of the security guards asked us if we wanted to see the Lady Knox Gyser as we would need to drive to a different car park for the show and then could come back to the main car park for the walk. Each car park has designated parking for campers which was good. The show for the Lady Knox Gyser only happens once a day I believe so you need to be at the park before 10. It is a reenactment of what happens naturally later on in the day but the history and the singing while it erupts adds to the beauty. Once the show us over its a quick drive back to the main car park to walk around the park. Checking in to the park is easy as they stamp your hand when you check in to the show for Lady Knox. There are three walks that are all clearly labelled and as they all flow into each other you can do all three in about 90 minutes. The walks are really easy with the exception of the last walk as there are some steps between levels. These are well maintained and just need to be aware if these. All in all it was a really awesome. day

5.00We were lucky enough to be one of the first tours around this amazing natural wonder. Our local guide was full of information about each of the thermal areas we walked around. The visuals are amazing, as to are some of the smells. This is a must visit, highly recommend you go on a guided tour, you will learn so much more.

5.00Visually stunning, it’s worth a visit for the sights and sounds of percolating lakes and smoking crevices. The colors are so vibrant and crayola. My only suggestion is to have timed entry to reduce the crowds. Buying a ticket for the day could have been set to an entry time to mitigate the crowds.

5.00Very well organised,varied and worth the entrance fee. We went in the afternoon so missed the Lady Knox geyser at 10.15am, so were given a free pass at the Shop to come back next day,
