Dublin is not only a vibrant city, but it is also steeped in a long history dating to Viking times and before. This walking tour, led by a local "Dub" and qualified guide, will bring to life the medieval city, where you will discover interesting facts and hear fascinating stories right where they happened. As you go, your guide will point out useful landmarks and answer any questions you have. Subject to opening times (Apr - Oct), you will visit a medieval church where there has been services continuously for more then 800 years, included for free as part of the tour.
As a unique point of difference, your guide can also provide you with a unique video route map, complete with captioned photos, video clips and music, sent to you after the tour via a secure personalised link as souvenir to share with friends and family and for memories to cherish!

City Hall
Our first landmark building is Dublin's City Hall. Built in the 18th century as the Royal Exchange, it later became the headquarters of Dublin Corporation, the city authority, before they relocated. Today, as well as hosting local government meeting, this fine building is a multipurpose venue, hosting anything from weddings to movie shoots!
Dublin Castle
Rounding the corner an up the cobblestoned Castle Street, we enter the upper courtyard of Dublin Castle, the nerve centre of power and centre of government administration in Ireland for more than 700 years from the Anglo Norman conquest to the end of was under British rule in 1922. While taking a brief break from commentary in compliance with local regulations, you can take some keepsake photos as you Marvel at the juxtaposition of 18th and 12th century architecture where remnants of early Norman rule remain. As we exit the courtyard, you'll listen to the story of the great 16th century escape of the last of the Gaelic chiefs from the still fully intact Record Tower, and learn about the famous 19th century writer who once worked here.

5.00Four of us from Canada toured the Easter Rising sites in Dublin on 16 September 2025 with Ben Shorten. Ben is most knowledgable about not only about the Uprising, but also Dublin and Irish history. His tour was most interesting and informative, and we visited those sites that were especially particular to the rebellion. He provided informed answers to all of our queries about the sites that we visited, and was a most congenial host. We very much enjoyed his tour and his company. Should we visit Dublin again, we’ll seek out Ben as our tour guide.

5.00We had a very informative, interesting, and enjoyable tour of Dublin. Ben was very knowledgeable about the history of Dublin and adapted the tour to our interests. He took a number of pictures of us with key sites and then organized and emailed them to us to record our experience. In addition, he emailed us a list of other activities and things to see in Dublin and and other locations in Ireland. I highly recommend Ben and this tour for anyone visiting Dublin for the first time.

5.00Ben was the best. He was informational, gave us space to explore on our own, and made a video souvenir of our trip that showed pictures from our day with fun captions. 10/10, would highly recommend.

5.00We loved our walking history tour of Dublin with Ben! He’s very knowledgeable of the city’s (and Ireland’s) history and delivers the information with compassion and a bit of the Irish humor! Ben offered suggestions for dinner spots later too that were superb! We would absolutely recommend you book a tour with Ben.
If you are on a cruise, don’t be afraid to book this private excursion with Ben!

5.00We had a great day with Ben! While visiting Dublin as a one day stop on our British Isles cruise, we booked a private excursion with Ben to hike along the coast of Howth. It was a beautiful day and Ben was a terrific guide. His knowledge of the history as well as the landscape kept us engaged all day. I gave him a heads up that I was celiac and he helped us pick a great lunch location along our route. We enjoyed hosting him for lunch as well as a pint at the end of our day. Could not have asked for a better guide or tour. Thanks Ben!
