Guildhall
This hour long walking tour in Derry will also retrace parts of the original march and visit places where the dead and wounded fell. The Bogside History Tour will examine the political and social repercussions of Bloody Sunday. The tour will pass ‘The Museum of Free Derry’ and conclude at the Bloody Sunday monument within sight of Free Derry corner and beneath the city walls of Derry. The Bogside (Irish: Taobh an Bhogaigh) is a neighbourhood outside the city walls.. The large gable-wall murals by the Bogside Artists, Free Derry Corner and the Gasyard Féile (an annual music and arts festival held in a former gasyard) are popular tourist attractions. The area has been a focus point for many of the events of the Troubles; in 1969, a fierce three-day battle known as the Battle of the Bogside became a starting point of the Troubles.

I was lucky enough to have a solo tour this past Sunday with the excellent tour guide, John Burke. What a privilege to get to spend time with someone who lived through the aftermath of the Battle of Bogside and Bloody Sunday. He trod honestly and carefully through a chequered history of the area and the Troubles providing facts and remaining impartial. As a British women, I felt it important to visit the area and didn’t regret my choice. I saw others self-guiding or reading from guide books, and would recommend to everyone to book on one of these tours to hear the story from people who lived and still live in the community. We walked much of the parade route and I learned the detail of what happened plus a lot of information about the survivors and ramifications. Fans of street art won’t be disappointed either with many poignant and impressive murals. John was generous with his time too and offered more history of this fascinating city. His passion for the city and commitment to the community was evident and I have no hesitation in highly recommending this tour.

Jimmy Toye was our guide. He participated in the Derry Civil Rights movement and was present at the Bloody Sunday murders. Personal, moving & informative. Important to learn about these recent events and lucky to do so from someone who lived through them.

This tour was very personal. Led by Jimmy Toye, who was a witness to the murders that happened on Bloody Sunday, we were led through the terrible events of that day in a frank and heartfelt way. If you want a view of Derry that brings its recent history to life, you will do no better.

I joined this Bogside history tour during my stay in Northern Ireland, coming in with an interest in understanding the region’s past and wanting to see it for myself and gain a more first-hand sense of the place. This tour delivered exactly that, and more. Our guide, Paul, was incredibly knowledgeable and generous with his time. What stood out most was how he handled such a complex and heavy subject with care and clarity. Beyond the historical facts, he shared personal insights from growing up in the area, which added a depth and authenticity you simply can’t get elsewhere. It gave a much more human perspective on complex topics that are often hard to fully grasp from a distance. If you’re visiting Derry to better understand its history, you shouldn’t miss this tour.

John Burke was an amazing guide. He was a fantastic story teller. He walked us through the story of Bloody Sunday. It was fantastic to hear about the events from the people who were directly affected by it and who grew up in the area. Would highly recommend.

Jimmy was an excellent guide, I don't know how you could get anyone better than someone who experienced Bloody Sunday first hand. He injected humour into a very sensitive and emotional subject and answered any questions the tour group had. Would strongly recommend.

Met at Guildhall with John our tour guide! He did let us know it’s advertised as an hour but is more 2 hours! Which didn’t bother any of us! It’s such a detailed and amazing experience! Felt privileged to be taught so much and the stories of Johns families and friends on Bloody Sunday and growing up in the Bog side felt like we were all lucky to have picked this tour! Defo recommend and so happy we did this tour.

We had the incomparable honor of taking the Bogside Walking tour with Peter. The tour was recommended as a "must" by our hotel (the Madron in Derry) and we are so grateful that we did it. My wife Jen and I and our 18 year old son Jasper knew a little about Bloody Sunday and the Troubles, of course, but having Peter as our guide educated and moved us far beyond what we had ever experienced. Peter shared not only his professional expertise (with his advanced degrees in Irish History and in Peach and Conflict Studies) but his unique experience as a lifetime resident of Derry. He shared with our group that he was 13 during Bloody Sunday - and that he had a brother who was 17 at the time. I can't imagine any more poignant, powerful and erudite tour than the one that Peter gave us. Our group consisted of us three Americans, five people from England, and one from Germany, and we were all captivated and moved. One of the many highlights was Peter's descriptions of each of the murals - especially because the artist is Peter's lifelong friend. That close relationship gave us insight into each detail of the murals - (which are intense and beautiful) as well as the context from which they were created. At the end of the tour, he escorted us into the Derry Museum (at a discount) and even took the time to accompany me through! His kindness, intelligence and passion brought each exhibit to vivid life, and I was humbled by his generosity. The other thing that was extraordinary about Peter is his wit and sense of humor. Given the heartbreaking history that he guided us through, it was incredibly lovely that Peter himself is very funny, and that he told hilarious stories. I recommend Peter and the Walking Bogside History Tour to everyone without reservation.

Review: We did this Bogside walking tour on Friday 27 March. It wasn’t led by Paul Doherty, but by a younger guide—local, deeply knowledgeable, and clearly rooted in the community. He was, if anything, over-prepared in the best sense: careful with detail, committed to accuracy, and able to shape a lot of material into a clear, compelling account without overwhelming us. The tour does exactly what it says: tracing the civil rights movement, the events of Bloody Sunday (30 January 1972), the key sites, and the aftermath, including the long struggle by families for truth and ultimate vindication in the Saville Report (15 June 2010). It holds together commemoration and analysis—naming the dead alongside a direct account of state violence and its consequences. One thing that stood out was the opening. In a short space of time, the guide set out a wider historical frame—enough to give a sense of how these events sit within a longer political and social history. That made everything that followed clearer. Retracing the route is quietly shocking. You stand in an ordinary street and are told that someone whose picture you've seen was shot at that exact spot. This is not a distant battlefield but a tight knit community. The presence of soldiers in that space is hard to take in and to forget. We had watched a film the night before, supported by the Museum of Free Derry, about Bloody Sunday and the decades-long fight by families to clear the names of those 14 killed—mostly very young men, unarmed, on a civil rights march. Seeing that, and then walking the ground the next day, was a powerful combination. We felt very indebted to those who devoted so much of their lives to correcting the historical record. The guide also made clear that this was a civil rights march, not a Republican event. What followed shows something that remains clear: political repression produces resistance. Armed aggression recruits for it—a lesson we have yet to learn. If you’re in Derry and at all interested in history, civil rights, or Irish culture, this tour is a real gift.
