Aso's knowledgeable guides will take you on an easy-to-understand and enjoyable tour of the Aso Caldera from its birth to the present, from the perspectives of volcanoes, geology, history, culture, and beliefs. By walking down the stone-folded path that descends the northern outer rim of the mountain and entering the caldera on your own, you can really feel the size of the caldera, one of the largest in the world. You can also enjoy spots related to the history, culture, and beliefs of Aso, where people have lived in the caldera for over 2,000 years. On the way, we will have a tea time with yogurt and sweets grown in the grasslands of Aso.

The tour starts from the Futae Pass overlooking the Aso Caldera and the majestic active volcano, Mt Aso. The road we will walk is the old Bungo Kaido, which has a history of over 400 years and used to connect Kumamoto (Higo Province) with Tokyo (Edo). The road passes through the grasslands of the northern outer rim of the caldera, where stone pavement still remains. In this 4-hour tour, you will enjoy the panoramic view of the Aso caldera, history and mythology.

Very nice walk, the guides are extremely kind and helpful. Interesting experience. Better to end it with a brief visit of Aso's crater, as we did.

It was good to be in touch with the nature and history of Aso. It was an experience I could not have had on my own. I enjoyed walking while listening to the unique local stories about the sleeping Buddha, and I would like to participate again. The guide's explanations and the scenery are good, so I think the tour would have been great if only the weather had been better.
