Join authorised, local guides for an authentic, small-group experience around Bergen - both the city and off-the-beaten path.

The first half of our tour focuses on Bergen's history. We wander the fortress complex, covering Bergen’s medieval history and short period as Norway's capital. After this crash course in Norwegian history, we make our way to Bryggen, Bergen’s UNESCO Site. Here, you learn about 1,000 years of trade history and the reason for Bergen’s founding and growth.

The second half of our tour is about life in Bergen. We leave the ‘touristy’ part behind and wander into the neighbourhood surrounding Bryggen. As you explore Bergen’s best kept secret, you’ll learn about everyday life. The tour ends by passing by our top picks for restaurants.

We consider this a moderate walk with stairs. The walk is approximately 3km (2 miles).

The Rosenkrantz Tower - Bymuseet I Bergen

Our tour begins by visiting the Bergen Fortress. When Bergen was the capital, this is where the palace was located. It's the best spot to start a walking tour!

Haakon's Hall - Bymuseet i Bergen

We pass by Håkon's Hall, the major part of the medieval palace still standing today. Here you learn about Bergen's time as an independent country and we also explain Norway's unions with Denmark and Sweden. Please note that we do not enter Håkons Hall (it is a museum that costs money). On rare occasions, the fortress is closed due to a private event.

Eirik was a delight! The rain didn’t stop us from our two hour walking tour of beautiful Bergen today (Sunday, November 10.) His passion and knowledge of the city was evident from the start and he had answers to all of our questions. He is a great storyteller and clearly loves his hometown. FIve+ stars for this superstar tour guide, with grateful appreciation.

Wonderful walk through the old town of Bergen with our extremely knowledgeable guide Jeff. Fantastic way to get to know this lovely town with a courteous, friendly and professional guide who really brought the history to life. Highly recommended.

Informative tour of Bergen. Well worth it. Was a cold wet day but Arild made the most of it and was funny and entertaining. Well worth the time to see a d learn all things Bergen!

The tour was very interesting, we toured the main points of the city and our guide Jeff, explained everything in great detail and was friendly, gave us recommendations of cafes, restaurants, etc.

This tour is a great introduction to Bergen for first-time visitors, and a good refresher for repeat visitors. Our tour guide, Jeff, was interesting and informative. He gave us a good overview of the history of Bergen and what it’s like to live there now, as well as sightseeing tips and excellent restaurant recommendations.

Janine was awesome. So informative, so enjoyable to be guided by. It was like taking a pleasant Time Machine ride through history in Bergen. Made me appreciate this uniquely lovely city in a way I wouldn’t have otherwise.

The walking tour was wonderful…Bergen 101. We learned about the history of the city and our guide, Jeff, showed us the buildings and areas of town in the historical context. Jeff was a wonderful guide. At the end of the tour my humans I had a real feel of the city. The walking tour set the stage for our total expert, and at the end, we felt as if Bergen was our “home”.
