Few places on Earth possess the magic of Kaikōura. Many who visit leave transformed. It is a special part of New Zealand, imbued with powerful natural energy. A place where tectonic plates collide, towering peaks fall to the sea and ocean currents converge. Such rare combinations lure an abundance of marine wildlife, the most famous being the Giant Sperm Whale. It was a whale that led the Māori ancestor Paikea to New Zealand many centuries ago. His descendants live in Kaikōura today. Fittingly, the whale continues to guide the people of Kaikōura and the visitors they host. Kaikōura is one of New Zealand's leading eco-tourism destinations offering a variety of exciting activities and experiences. Despite the recent rise in tourist numbers, the town retains much of its historical charm. Many new motels, cafes and restaurants can be found in beautifully restored old buildings. Fresh local seafood is always on the menu. The retention of the town's distinctive character has made Kaikōura extremely attractive to artists. Their work, inspired by the remarkable landscape and wildlife, can be seen all over town.

There are two sperm whales living off the coast at Kaikoura. We saw one of them and a small Wright whale.

A fantastic adventure on a pristine scenery. Very professional organization, flawless scheduling of the boat - Te Ao Marama. There are 9 seats available on Captain's deck, available for an extra fee. I was lucky getting one, the view is unrivalled! The crew greeted us first in Te Reo Māori and then in English, we were briefed very precisely about Kaikōura coast and its features that makes the place unique for whales, their habits and for us human visitors come and watch these mammals that for so long have been harassed and brought on the verge of extinction by whale hunters. We were blessed on our cruise to see both humpback and sperm whales, a truly marvelous experience. Thanks to Captain and whole crew for making this happen! Nga mihi aroha mo te waka nui ! Thanks a lot for the cruise !

A very memorable whale-watching experience. We saw both sperm and killer whales (maybe 6 killer whales in total) at close (but not too close) quarters over the space of 30 or so minutes. Beautiful weather and a professional crew made for a great experience.

Excellent trip with Whale Watch Kaikoura from the moment they picked us up till the very end. All the staff including Captain Malena were very professional and helped locate a sperm whale called " Mati Mati" not once but twice. We saw lots of Dusky dolphins too. We recommend booking the VIP cabin for better views and pics!

Great experience whale watching! I am always skeptical before I do any sort of activity involving wild animals and this group was very respectful. The commentary throughout was great and I enjoyed getting actual information about Kaikoura and the sea life there. I seen a sperm whale, hectors dolphins, NZ fur seals, Dusky dolphins as well as albatross, giant petrals, and other sea birds. Would recommend for a great experience whale watching!
