The current temple was built in 1874, funded by the Nattukkottai Chettiar. This temple is used by both Hindus and Buddhists. The temple was originally a small statue under a tree prayed to by the Hindu people but has been developed by the people in Matale. The first Kumbhabhishekham of the temple was held in 1960.
Aluvihara Rock Cave Temple
The Aluvihare Rock Temple (also called Matale Alu Viharaya) is a sacred Buddhist temple located in Aluvihare, Matale District of Sri Lanka. Surrounded by hills, the Aluvihara cave temple is situated 30 km north of Kandy on the Matale-Dambulla road. The history of Aluvihare Rock Temple is traced back to the 3rd Century B.C to the reign of King Devanampiyatissa. It is believed that the king built the dagoba, planted the Bo sapling and founded the temple after the introduction of Buddhism to the country during his reign. Aluvihare Rock Temple was the historic location where the Pāli Canon was first written down completely in text on ola (palm) leaves. Many monastery caves, some of which exhibit frescoes are situated near this temple.

5.00Aruna took us to Dambulla and on the way there showed us some other interesting places worth seeing. Would definitely recommend as Aruna is a friendly guide that speaks English well.

5.00Thanks to Aruna who drove us from Kandy to Sigiriya then Dembulla. His vehicle is very comfortable and Aruna knew how to listen to us throughout the day. He guided us and found us a Sri Lankan restaurant where we ate well! We were also able to discuss life in Sri Lanka and it was very nice. We recommend Aruna for all your visits!

5.00This day trip was absolutely unforgettable! The highlights included the inspiring Dambulla Cave Temple, the iconic Sigiriya Lion Rock, and the Pidurangala Rock. The views from the top of both rocks were absolutely stunning. Our driver/ guide Aruna, was friendly, knowledgeable, and full of fascinating insights into Sri Lankan food and culture. His comfortable minivan made the journey smooth and relaxing, and we felt completely safe in his hands throughout the day. Highly recommended!

5.00I went on a day trip with my family and we had such a fun time! Aruna drove us around to different beautiful spots, and we just enjoyed exploring, taking pictures, and laughing together. It was such a nice day out and a great memory to look back on.

5.00We drove from Kandy to Sigiriya and were absolutely thrilled. He is a very safe and calm driver, with whom we felt comfortable at all times. Along the way, he offered us several stops to see sights – but we only looked at the impressive Dambulla cave temple, as our baby slept peacefully during the ride. He showed full understanding for this and drove the rest of the route with particular consideration. Extremely friendly, helpful and attentive – we can absolutely recommend him!

5.00The driver was very helpful, an experience I would recommend to everyone who wants to visit sigirya. Better to take the car because in tuc tuc the journey is a bit long.

5.00We had an amazing full-day tour from Kandy, covering some of the most stunning cultural and natural sites in the region — including Amman Kovil, Aluvihara Temple, Dambulla Cave Temple, and the breathtaking Pidurangala Rock. Each stop had something unique to offer, but Dambulla and Pidurangala really stood out. Our driver, Aruna, was not only friendly and professional, but also knew all the scenic spots for photos and even helped us spot some wildlife along the way. A smooth, safe, and unforgettable journey — highly recommended!

5.00Aruna gave us an incredible tour of Sigiriya and Dambulla. The best part of the trip for us was the sunset view from the top of Sigiriya rock, which was only possible because of his recommendation and careful planning. He also took us to the best view points on the top of rock, and told the various stories about the structures, which were interesting in itself. We also went to checkout other local spots and hidden gems with him. Thanks Aruna for all the memories.
