This experience is a beginner-friendly version of Yabusame (traditional horse-back archery). ・ About us: the core of our mission is wellbeing, not just for our guests and horses, but as a guiding principle of everything we do. We contribute to animal welfare by providing retired horses with a second career in tourism. In Japan, horses often face limited options after retirement. By offering them a new purpose, we essentially save their lives while allowing them to thrive in a healthy environment. We also work on preserving Japan’s cultural heritage, the ancient art of Yabusame (horseback archery), which is less practiced in modern times. Together, we can preserve tradition, promote sustainability, and create a meaningful connection between humans and horses. ・ Duration: about 2 hours for two participants (may vary slightly depending on group size). ・ We use native Japanese Kiso horses, which are slightly smaller than Western breeds. For safety and comfort, we recommend that the rider’s weight is within 85–90 kg. Other guests are welcome to enjoy our horse-drawn carriage ride through Fujiyoshida city or horse interaction experience instead.

If you’re even remotely curious about Japanese culture, horses, or just want to try something truly unforgettable, Barikiya’s Yabusame experience near Mt. Fuji is a must-do. Set against the breathtaking backdrop of the iconic mountain and framed by the full bloom of cherry blossoms, the setting alone feels like stepping into a historical painting. The staff at Barikiya were all incredibly kind, attentive, and genuinely passionate about sharing the world of traditional mounted archery. They made sure everyone felt welcome, and the presence of English-speaking staff made the whole experience smooth and accessible, even for non-Japanese speakers. Located at Komuro Sengen Shrine, which added a spiritual and cultural depth to the day. The horses were gentle and well-cared-for, and the hands-on approach to learning Yabusame was thrilling yet approachable—perfect for complete beginners and experienced riders alike. This is more than just an activity; it’s a cultural immersion, a scenic adventure, and a moment of pure connection with Japanese tradition. Highly, highly recommended for all ages and experience levels. You’ll leave with unforgettable memories—and maybe a new passion.

This authentic experience was fantastic. To be able to learn Japanese traditions while incorporating a passion for horses has no words to explain. The staff truly cared for our experience and cared for the horses. We are avid horse owners and although the experience for seasoned riders is basic, the entire adventure was unforgettable.
