We enjoyed the cruise enormously. Our guide had an expansive knowledge of the fauna of the lagoon and communicated that knowledge to us, showing his passion for the people and animals of Kakadu. A really good day.

Jess, our guide was so knowledgeable! Definitely recommend this cruise. We did the sunrise one this time in December , have also done sunset one in July, both special.

A surreal experience. This isn’t a typical cruise — it feels more like an expedition into the mysteries of nature, culture, and everything in between. Our guide, Deny, clearly loves what he does, and it shows. We saw quite a few crocodiles, but the trip itself is absolutely worth taking even without them.

This is the second yellow water cruise we have been on - after doing a sunrise tour over three years ago, a yellow water billabong cruise is on our list as a must do each time we return. We opted for a sunset tour this time and it was incredible. Our tour guide, Jess, was knowledgable about both the history and biodiversity of the yellow water billabong and was quick to spot and point out a number of interesting plants, trees, animals and birdlife. We must have seen 20 + saltwater crocodiles cruising through the water, lazing on the banks and snacking on some big barra. Watching the magpie geese fly over set against the classic cracker of a NT sunset will be a memory I cherish forever.

This was our favourite excursion during our three week trip to Northern Territory. We saw so many animals and birds - it was simply amazing. Batch, our minibus and boat driver was also our tour guide and we could not have had a better guide. He was from South African but had done a lot of guide qualifications and was a positive mine of information. He also had a lovely and fun manner. I asked him many questions and he was so informed on nature and culture in this region. We were on the 9am cruise for two hours and saw way more birds and animals than we expected. Batch found us a crocodile before we even left the mooring! We saw loads of saltwater crocodiles, including two out of the water sunning on the bank. We saw so many amazing birds - magpie geese, jabiru, kingfisher, egrets, eagles and sea eagles in a tree by their nest. Batch showed us things like a tree termite mound which was black with black veins going up and down the tree trunk and branches where the termites run. We started the tour in a billabong (sort of quiet side water) and then cruised up the main river. On the way back we went past the billabong entrance to 'the plains' section. There was a mass of deep pink water lilies here which looked stunning. They are also called lotus flowers. Batch told us all about the different parts of the flowers, pods and seeds and their uses which was really interesting. We also saw jacana birds who have feet with very long toes and can walk on the pads of the water lilies. The water lily pads had big droplets of water on them as they are naturally hydrophobic with a waxy coating so cause the water to collect in beads and big droplets, We saw lots of wild horses and the highlight for us was spotting a water buffalo on the bank. He was shy and hiding in some trees but stayed there for a minute of so as we stopped to watch. We also saw a darter bird with a very long neck catch a fish by spearing it with it's pointed bill. It then tossed the fish in the air, caught it and swallowed it whole. We saw a lot of the 'salvinia molesta' which is causing big problems for in the national park as it is an invasive weed that has come from South America and is covering large portions of the water. An extra shout out for Batch - just after we left the Cooinda Lodge pickup in a minibus a wallaby ran out seemingly under the wheels. However Batch reacted so incredibly quickly that we just missed it and it ran away fine. I was so grateful to Batch for his lightning fast reaction as I didn't want to hurt a wallaby. We would have liked to do the sunrise or sunset cruise but because we were staying at the Mercure Crocodile hotel in Jabiru this would have meant a 60km drive in the dark to get there or back and we didn't want to risk that. A man in reception at our hotel showed us a video of his journey to work at 5.30am the day before. The driver in front had stopped as there was a water buffalo on the right side of the road. It was standing there stationery so the driver set off slowly at which point the water buffalo ran in front of his car! The driver stopped again immediately and all was fine with car and water buffalo but it convinced us not to risk driving in the dark to get to the sunrise cruise or to get back after the sunset cruise. In view of this I would recommend staying in the Cooinda Lodge (where the minibus will collect you and is just 5 minutes from the dock) if you think you wish to do either the sunrise of sunset cruises. Having said that, we thought our 9-11am cruise was amazing and I'm not sure if we missed out on seeing anything, except possibly richer colours in the landscapes at dawn or dusk.

The experience was both peaceful and extremely educational, our guide shared so many eye opening facts about the diverse ecosystem that makes up Kakadu and how people, flora and fauna coexist. The diversity of wildlife and nature we witnessed was wonderful and it truly was a special experience.

Referred to as NT’s largest Billabong the Yellow Water is actually the flood plain for the South Alligator River and is an absolute mecca for Croc and Wildlife spotting. With an excellent commentary from the knowledgeable crew the flat bottom boats get you up close to the action on the shore line. Plenty of Croc action as you would expect but the amount and number of bird species seem was probably more impressive. A thoroughly entertaining way to spend and hour or so in the Kakadu National park.
